Race Thompson

Not a make or break recruit. Would have been a good addition but I really feel like Conditt is someone who has a bigger upside than Thompson. Always felt it was going to be hard to get Thompson away from Big 10 schools.

Fred Was not that good at recruiting either. He got some great transfers that helped us. George was a good recruit, not great at the time. Matt Thomas was the one we were all excited about. Monte was a good recruit, not great. So we shall see how some of these kids we do have develop or if they are better than expected..

I didn't realize that transfers were not part of "recruiting". Fred consistently got talent to Ames. The "building relationships" narrative is sincere by CSP but at the end of the day you have to close. In November of 2018 we will have a much better picture of the program's overall health.

BTW Sheron Dorsey Walker was runner up Mr Basketball in Michigan. So that must make him great also. Botton line is Mr Basketball is great for High school kids. Does not always translate to college. Clayton Vetter was Mr. Basketball in Iowa. haha

I know it's not the popular opinion because *gasp* it's critical of something Cyclone, but it's becoming more clear that we need to pony up and pay for a guy that can go out and finish these jobs. Otz had "it". This staff, outside of pulling in Wigginton, has not shown the ability to put the nail in the coffin despite "being in great position" so many times. The amount of failure this summer pulling in transfers to an ideal situation for said transfer, combined with missing out on a guy (and not the first of his kind) we'd been recruiting for a few years then losing him to a school that recruited him for a few months...it's become pretty damn rough. It feels like a novice operation that doesn't know how to break through.

Flame away. Make excuses such as "not a make or break recruit" or "felt like a Big 10 guy" or "we've still got a lot of guys and it'll be a great class". Failed recruiting is becoming a troubling trend, and it's the thing that gets coaches fired. Would love to be wrong of course.

I agree with this. He needs to do it sooner rather than later, before he loses the general momentum that the program has right now.

I'll comment after the class is complete.

Everyone who writes "I'd love to be wrong" almost always wants to be right but is condescending.

Here's the thing. Coaches are not stupid despite what we think. You seem that think you are the first one to say that prohm needs recruits. You probably think that if only he'd listen to you, he'd know the secret to success.

I guarantee that prohm isn't going out there and saying "well ****, who cares?"

Freaking out over this crap does nothing. Let it play out. If he sucks, he'll get fired. (Or in the long tradition of Iowa state coaches, he'll just end up with a much better job.)

I like who we have, but it's been hard not to have some doubts about recent events. I realize every school misses out on some of their top choices, but this staff could use a more-recent recruiting win to soften the blow.

My frustration reaches its peak watching a really really bad team like Missouri change its fortunes so quickly. Meanwhile, we put in years of effort and still don't land one player that is rated lower than a couple players they get.

I know it doesn't help that Iowa doesn't produce a lot of elite talent, but I'd love to get into a position where other schools feel like they aren't going to be able to lure top-level talent from us.

man is it tough to get players from minneapolis. I really thought that would be a good strategy for us but we're 0-fer over several years and two coaches.

Despite all of the misses, our 2018-2019 roster still looks to be in fine shape.

I'm confident that this staff will get players. They seem to be great at identifying talent early, and I know that if they aren't able to fill out the roster with HS guys (quite common at ISU), that they will rustle all of the bushes out there to find quality players.

You think I'd like to be right in this situation? To see Prohm fail? That's a heck of a reach.

Why do I "seem that think you are the first one to say prohm needs recruits"? What does that even mean?

My opinion is straight forward and there is no "freaking out over this crap" in my post. I posted a level-headed opinion. We've seen things play out. They'll continue to play out. My point is that it seems apparent we need to pay to have a recruiting specialist on staff. We do not have a recruiting specialist on staff.

You are the reason fanatical sites like this one can be insufferable - opposing opinions are lambasted. Have you considered the other side? Are you capable of considering the other side?

The problem with your post is none of us want to see that. We have great momentum in the program right now and need to continue that. Prohm is a great coach but we desperately need a great recruiter on the staff along with him. If we let the recruiting issues continue and they lead to poor performance on the court, we have missed a big opportunity as a program.

Your post implied that prohm is too stupid to know that he needs recruits.

It also implied that he is purposely not doing that.

Right now he has the best staff he can get snd he has confidence in that staff. When he doesn't have confidence, he will make changes. Your devlaration on his staff needs are worthless.

Again, he is not an idiot. He has the best staff he thinks he can get. If he feels they are not the best, he'll make a change. If his judgement is wrong, he'll get fired.

My problem with posts like this is it very much reads like "if only he'd listen to me, he'd hire the best coach ever. And that coach would love to come here".
