Between the 2017 and 2018 classes Prohm has had to fill a ton of scholarships. It's not an ideal situation and when you are filling that many holes you are going to have a lot of misses. The whole McNeil situation just stoked the flames for all of the negative nancy's...All things considered this staff has been doing just fine on the recruiting trail.
Not saying it wouldn't work, but it would be a complete shot in the dark. In a thread where people are wanting to replace a current assistant, because they lack connections, and an ability to close on recruit, Fizer seems like those two things would be his biggest question marks.
On another note, I'm not sure anyone can blame assistants for not "closing." Especially on this staff, it feels Prohm is fully involved in all recruiting aspects, and when it comes to one of their main targets, he's all in on all of them. It feels to me that it's the job of assistants to have connections, or creat connections with recruits, and get in the door, so Prohm can close.
I agree with this assessment. Looking at what we've gotten, it does look pretty good.
1. Wigginton is a great recruit
2. Lewis is a great recruit.
3. Shayock is a great transfer
4. Brase is a gamble but has really good upside.
5. Beverly should be solid and could be really good.
6. Jacobson has already been an important contributor at a Power 5 school and has a pretty good resume.
Yes, the McNeil thing is ugly for a couple of reasons. First, if we'd known earlier, it seems like we could have had McKinley Wright who is (probably) a more well-rounded guard at this time, albeit with less upside. Second, it left our Freshman class really small when it would have been nice to have bigger numbers this year.
It would have been nice to get the big guy that went to UNLV or the guard from NM. However, if Brase is reasonably healthy this year and at least one of Babb or Long shows some improvement, we've got a bit of depth this year and we look very strong the following year.

We've gone far down the rabbit hole with a pretty large list of guys that either didn't commit, or committed then backed out.

With an experienced recruiter, we get a few of these guys and aren't forced to settle - yes, settle - on Beverly, Brase, Jacobson. Could they turn out great? Sure. But there was a reason those guys were still around.

My opinion is that you are being overly critical. It is impossible to know all of the factors that went into their decisions to play else where. Not to mention most of those kids went to high level programs as well. You will always have more misses than hits in recruiting. I get your frustration that it seems like Prohm/Prohm's staff is losing this battle but he is also going after a much more talented pool, at least in my opinion, than ISU has been even able to get in the door with in a long time. It is not time to panic or shake things up yet. It is okay to be frustrated with losing a kid like Race but let's not snowball this into a bigger issue than it really is.
I think people also give Otz way too much credit as a recruiter. He is really good, obviously that's why he is a head coach, but I don't think you throw him into the mix and that is the difference on 2 or 3 of these guys.

The bolded is where I am at. Losing out on Race stinks. I get it. We all wish he would have picked us.
The way i look at it is this... Prohm has basically had to sign 11 (eleven) players in two years, still try and balance classes so he doesn't need to do anything like this again, and get top 100 recruits to boot for us to be happy. Think about it... If this were a situation where we had 2-3 schollies to fill each of the past two years, our results would have been better. IMO anyway.
With all of these great recruits and transfers there is no reason to not be in the tournament in 18-19 and beyond. Ultimately that will be what CSP is judged on.
Agreed. Not clear what the strategy is. Something needs to change as Prohm can't do it all himself. If his assistants can't recruit a high level guy each this year, he needs to find someone who can.
Prioritizing the 3 M's (Minnesota, Milwaukee, Michigan) would be a good start to a strategy. This doesn't preclude you from looking East as the current staff favors but Canada and other northern locales seem to offer options that are sticking. Ironic because this thread is about a Minnesotan picking Indiana.
If you're listing guys who visited, but didn't commit, then you're missing quite a few.
And the last 5 on your list, Iowa St spent about 4 weeks total recruiting them.
Show me a non blue blood that gets majority of their targets.
Brase - Richmond, Nebraska, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, and Iowa State....yeah, cream of the crop offers there
Jacobson - did he even have an offer list?
