PSU Campbell Presser

This was the year. If Ped St didn’t hire Campbell, there a good chance Michigan would have.
Klatt’s take was that of the remaining available coaches, Campbell was the best fit for either opening.
Yep. It was only a matter of time, after getting deep into it with USC a few years ago, that MC was going to have an opportunity from one of his chosen ones and he left town. Because he had declined other opportunities, I had started to believe the smoke he was selling, but looking back it was so obvious we were near the end. If it didn't happen this year it was definitely happening after next year, when all the seniors left. And we'd be right where we are right now anyway.

So we rip the band-aid and move on.

Man to be a fly on the wall in that convo with Pollard and Campbell...

Like someone else said, when you have an employee that is flirting with other jobs year after year, eventually you grow tired of it and tell them to take one. I'm sure it was exhausting for Pollard to try and pull every string he had damn-near every year to give Campbell something to keep him to stay.

Pollard's job is to do what's best for ISU. If this is how it was always going to be, perhaps Campbell leaving was inevitable.

Well... he said they were all a TEAM.... and I guess that true? TEAM Campbell.... when he went, they almost all went. Certainly NOT Team Iowa State though... had nothing to do with Iowa State it turns out.
He’s a phony, egotistical narcissist with paper thin skin. And also cheesey as f**k.

Shame on all of us for buying into it.

He may be right but Klatt isn't all good takes.

MC had an ego, too, despite how he portrayed himself. You get the sense from his PSU promo interviews that we never quite appreciated him enough for how hard he toiled to make things work with what he had here. There are places where the football coach can dwarf the rest of the athletics department, but it's only in places where football is the only sport that matters, and that is just not ISU. Giving Campbell more ultimately meant taking away from TJ and Bill, no way Pollard could endorse that without the entire department erupting. It is what it is, it was probably time.

I really can’t wait for Campbell to get pressure right away there. His thin skin won’t be able to take the criticism after a 24-13 home opener against Marshall.

I always imagined him being like 5’9” but now that I think about it I don’t actually know that. Is he tall for real?

Saw him once in a hotel and he was taller than I'd figured but I think he was wearing black and that late 90s style hat so probably a slimming look.

Especially when he won't answer any questions about why they lost.

If Rocco comes out and throws 3 INT's an no TD's.... PSU fans better get used to Matt saying he thought Rocco played a great game in his opinion.

"Yeah, you know...I'm just so proud of our kids and the fight they showed. We just need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves what our identity as a football team is. We need to ask ourselves...do we have the character and resilience to respond when adversity strikes? Ultimately, you have to love the process and eventually the process will love you back. This game is about winning in the margins and that has been our identity as a program from day 1."

Did I get them all?????

Without the rules that a league like the NFL uses to maintain competitive balance.
Yeah it's ridiculous. Even the UFL is an infinitely better league than college football right now.

I'm not exactly sure how they're going to fix it, and I'm doubtful that there will ever be agreement from the blue bloods for rules that maintain complete competitive balance, but there's got to be a better system.

The only thing I can think of happening that may help fix it are a conference or a group of conferences establishing a new framework / system with sensible rules and having a network buy in (if ESPN won't do it, then Apple or Amazon bringing in the big bucks to disrupt).

Then either we're going to see everyone join that new model or college football will fragment into different leagues.

"To be honest with you", I'm not sure!

With annual and perpetual free agency, fans will become reluctant to become too attached to any individual players.

This will eventually spread to team following as well, as interest is cumulative.

Attachment drives viewing, attendance, and financial support.

At some point, every consumer questions price versus satisfaction.

Ah well, up your giving folks!
You make a valid point.

Now that so many people dislike Campbell are people willing to talk about how him turning down all these reported jobs most likely never happened? You’re telling me he turned down NFL jobs and other good programs to be the 5th choice in a full rebuild at PSU?

I always kinda let this go but since people are anti CMC now I think most can realize that no one outside of Ames believed he actually had these offers and turned them down. Maybe there was interest but zero chance he actually turned these down.
