PSU Campbell Presser

Now that so many people dislike Campbell are people willing to talk about how him turning down all these reported jobs most likely never happened? You’re telling me he turned down NFL jobs and other good programs to be the 5th choice in a full rebuild at PSU?

I always kinda let this go but since people are anti CMC now I think most can realize that no one outside of Ames believed he actually had these offers and turned them down. Maybe there was interest but zero chance he actually turned these down.
I totally believe he was being courted regularly during the Purdy years. Recent years and post-NIL world? Ehh... questionable at best. Being patient definitely worked out for him, though, I'll give him that. He's got about eighty million reasons to be happy with his career choices right now.

It's possible... but he might have just not felt ready yet... or waiting for children to get older, etc? Hard to know.

Sounds like he was halfway out the door to USC though if it was up to him.... but sounds like his wife didn't want to go there maybe.... or Purdy had some sway?

I've always suspected he pushed away some of his suitors by being the absolute control freak many of us think he is. At ISU, he was judge jury and executioner of everything football program. He's the CEO, he runs it all, it's his show and his way. Not all places are willing to give that level of control. The NFL certainly wouldn't for someone like him.

He did. It’s hard to refute that interest and offers that were sent to Campbell.

What offer did he get? You got a source that says he was actually offered these NFL jobs or any other high profile job?

I’ve never seen any outside this board and I think we all know how bias some of the reporting was based off the responses to cmc leaving.

But a quick Google says this:

"Matt Campbell was selected for his proven record of integrity, toughness, and commitment to student success, aligning with core Penn State value."

Matt Campbell has all of the integrity, toughness, and commitment to student success as....Penn. State?

I might need a beer and a shower

USC, Washington, Tennessee, Detroit Lions, New York Giants all approached him.

And I’ll trust my source.

Oh I for sure wanted him instead of Tucker. The Michigan situation has worked out extremely well despite complete ineptitude
Michigan got lucky that KW was sitting there. I think he’s a 2-3 year guy. Maybe 1. Gives legitimacy as a coach and allows Michigan to find someone while KW turns the boiling water down.

That is what Nick Saban demanded @ Alabama, and they gave it to him.

Yeah I would say 3-4 with having someone in waiting to learn that hopefully can keep it in their pants.

Plus the new AD will want to pick someone a few years down the road for sure

I also meant instead of Fitzy.
The mega donors wanted fitz so I’m fine with fitz being there. Most were very anti smith which cost the AD his job (shame as I liked him) and cratered NIL and fundraising. I don’t like the fitz hire but I like his staff a lot and he already has the next coach in waiting so even if he only lasts 3-4 years the team should be fine.

I think Matt liked his time at Iowa State and for many years it did not make that much sense to leave.

He probably had decent leverage in negotiating with Penn State (as they completely botched the hiring process), it gave him an opportunity to move closer to family, double his salary, and have the NIL landscape be easier to navigate.

He probably saw Heacock nearing retirement and thought it might be a good opportunity to try a fresh start. If he fails, Matt will still probably have a nice payout.

That makes way too much sense, what are you doing?!
