Pre-fall depth chart

CPRs recruiting philosophy the first few years was crap. From long, lean OL to "growing players." I rememebr the year Utah kicked are *** at home and CPOR talked about recruiting QBs because they are the best athletes ont he team and they can always move positions. It didn't work. He tried to take DBs and make them safeties, Safeties and make them LBs, LBs and make them DEs and DEs and make them DTs. That led to the last two year's defense.....small, injury prone and playing out of position. Luke Knott and Levi Peters aresafety bodies playing OLB with MLB speed. It's not their fault they are out of position. It's not Miller's fault he was out of position most of his career.

You may not like that strategy, but it was originally done by Howard Schnellenberger at The U which laid the foundation for them becoming a powerhouse. After than many schools copied that strategy, notably TCU still uses this strategy with a lot of success (now granted they are in Texas and have access to better talent).

Lot of question marks on the defense. On offense it doesn't sound good for the center position. Sounds like Lalk is the guy simply bc he can snap the ball.
Lalk was servicable last year at center. Scoggins has been working all summer and has all fall to continue to work on the snap so I wouldn't count him out yet. especially since the depth chart stats Lalk OR Scoggins. I would guess is he hadn't improved this summer he wouldn't be an OR

I think they WANT Scorggins to be the Center. IF he gets better at snapping, he's the best option. If he can't snap though, then obviously he can't be the starting snapper.

You should follow TCU's recruitng. They don't recruit LBs to become DTs. They do run a 4-2-5 and recruiting accordingly.

I have no issues growing players but you can't grow a hole squad because if you miss you are screwed. And iSu missed. Schnellenberger didn't grow a whole squad either. There is this myth that iowa grows players but for every player they "gorw and develop" there are two highly rated guys playing along side of them. TCU is exactly the same.

I am an Eagles fan and love to hear Chip Kelly speak. He has measurables he goes by when drafting and he used measurables when recruiting. He says, you can take a guy that doesn't meet the measurables but you can't take a bunch of them. If you take an undersized DT, you better not have an undersized LB behind them. If you have a LB that doesn't meet the measurables, he better be sandwiched by two guys that don't.

BTW-It isn't 1990 anymore "growing" players like they did at the U is a little different.

I am glad he made it, however, he won't be ready until at least mid season.

Hard to say. Leath is a big body and may pick up things faster than one thinks. It certainly would have been better if he had been here in January. But better late than never.

Maybe, and this is a big maybe, we can get by with the rotation that we have until about game 6. Leath can be ready to step in and see some good minutes. I say "get by" as in going 4-1 or 5-0. So it's a big maybe.

If we flop and start 2-3, who gives a **** at that point

There is really no way to tell if he will be ready or not. You will know in about 2 weeks when someone asks the coaches how ready he is. We have certainly seen JC guys come in and take a starting spot in a matter of a few weeks. Based on experience in the RB position, there is a decent chance he will see the field early in the season.

Leath is a DT. Did you think we were referring to Kendall Williams?
