Post-game thread - ISU vs. Iowa

The only reason we won tonight is because we have more talent - that is it. We cannot handle on ball screens and if Iowa had some semblance of talent it would have been much closer. This team has talent but no grit and no post presence. Some will say CB is our post player but I don't consider a fall-away jumper to be post moves. Hard to believe that Greg McD doesn't have a center with post moves. All his teams at UNI had below average talent in the post but they had great post moves and I thought Greg was the one teaching them those moves but maybe not. I really hope things get better because I really really like Greg McD and want him to be our coach for a long time but I am beginning to have doubts.

I think this team plays far to passively. It's the reason we don't fight for position to get the rebounds, and the reason we never really have a player that will successfully go to the hole strong. Dendy is the only player I saw tonight that played with the fire we need, I hope as he get's back into the rotation that fire rubs off on the rest of the team.

Not aggressive at all and I think that hampers us. We rarely step in to try to take a charge or drive to the hole and try to draw contact. Honest question, when was the last time an ISU player fouled out? I know it's not a good thing to have your players fouling out and that could be good disciplined play when they get in foul trouble, but it also shows a lack of aggression IMO. Having someone foul out 1 out of 8 or 9 games wouldn't be the worst thing in the world and would at least show we're getting in there and getting after it.

I'm sorry people. I'm glad they won....it would have been embarrassing if they hadn't....but I was not impressed with what I saw.

Iowa is a bad team. Yet, they won the second half, and it wasn't just at the end either. Again, ISU got out-rebounded. By Iowa.......IOWA! Wasn't GMac supposedly going to work on that in these days off they had? Well, it didn't work. CB looked better, but still takes way too many 3's. Lucca is basically useless except for an occasional 3 point shot. Gilstrap still cannot control his body much of the time and travels, or gets an offensive foul.

The worse part of all this is the coaching. There were times tonite that ISU still let Iowa dictate the pace. The weak press was on and then off, even if it was working. I just don't understand what GMac is doing at all, and I don't think his players do either. In the half-court offense, all they do is stand around. And they all dribble much more then they pass. That is bad coaching.

I'm sorry, but I did not see the improvement in the team tonite. I just saw a potentially good team playing a very bad team, like the first 4 games of the season. ISU won because of superior speed and athletic ability. That won't be the case in the Big 12. I doubt it will even be the case against Bradley or Houston. Certainly not against Duke.

I hope the team lives up to their potential against Bradley and Houston, but with this coach I have my doubts. I just did not see the problems from the last 3 games addressed tonite.

Yeah, it just sucks that CB shot 80% from behind the arc. That is unacceptable.:jimlad:

First off, I'm glad we won. But Iowa is going to finish in the bottom of the Big 10 if not last. We beat them by ten. It will be a long season under McDermott and will continue to be long seasons as long as he is coach here at ISU. This team has A LOT of talent and he is just wasting them as players in his system. Again, glad we beat Iowa, but they are really down this year and we should have beat them by 30. Look across the board....their roster compared to ours. Everyone of our players is more than capable of dominating theirs and we only won by ten. What does that mean then? COACHING!!!! McDermott, get your head out of your *** and let these boys loose. And before anyone jumps on this.....I know we were up 15-20 points most of the second half, but that ending was pathetic. McDumb even said in is press conf. that it took them 3-4 possessions to figure out how to defend Payne on the 3's. Well coach, 3-4 possessions equal 9-12 points. I'm just glad he figured it out after 3 possessions and not 6 or 7 or we would have lost this game. Great job coach.

I was disappointed with the ending, but there were some fun plays to watch tonight. Again, when people drive the lane, you have to foul them HARD. It seems like once someone is in the air we won't touch them on layup attempts.

Someone start an intro video thread. When the kid touched Brackins jersey, that was ******* awesome!

Excellent win.

Rebounding still a problem, and somebody still won't dive for anything (I want to see blood on the floor, Lucca).

In this thread claims have been made that ISu was out coached and rebounded. The same old song and dance. Does it ever get boring? Box score states rebounds at 24-24. Sure, I watched Iowa out-hustle ISU for some boards, but I also saw the Cyclones position themselves for rebounds gained by the athletic talent of Brackins and Gilstrap.
One guard will not throw himself into board wars. (Come on Lucca, do more!!!!!!)

Out coached? The dude for Iowa had his hands in his pockets for most of the game. He looked more bored than Morgan. That is hard to do.

Sure, the last 3 minutes were a disaster, but no way was this game in doubt when we were up 70-52 at about 5 remaining. They went on a 19-11 run. Not a good finish, which was problems against N'western and UNI. I don't really care about style.

Maybe time to see Christopherson get some starts over Lucca. I like Lucca's shot, but he frustrates me in many, many other aspects.

There were stretches we looked really good like we were going to run them out of the building, and stretches that I felt like we would really struggle against a top half Big 12 team. Maybe when there are so many new parts to this team it's to be expected. I just hope they gel soon. Good to get back in the win column.

oh boy what a long season it will be. Worst team in the Big 10 and we have a close one at home. Check the oil, grease the gears this car needs a tune up. Something is very wrong to have this much talent and only win it by 10. Life as a Cyclone I guess.

Game was not close. A team goes on a 19-2 in the final 5 minutes after being down 18 is close. A 19-11 run over the same period of time does not equal a close game.

Please watch the game before posting, please.

umm I did watch the game and we had them down by nearly 20 then they pulled within 8 at one point I do believe. You think what you want but that was a very bad Iowa team that we just did enough to win against. We take our game into the big12 like it is now and its going to be one long season.

ISU got into the 80s despite missing a bunch of FTs, and got quite a few FT attempts. Those are good things. I just hope they can somehow translate those good things into future games. Somehow, they've got to fix the FT shooting. Given the competition, it's probably not feasible to draw too many conclusions from this one...

We were outrebounded because Iowa waits for 30 seconds to shoot, while we shoot a majority of our shots within the first half of the shot clock. More shots put up equals more rebounds for the defense.

Just a remarkably poor analysis.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but what I think led to the strange ending to the game was that, around the 2:15? minute mark, Iowa quit taking the quick foul (apparently recognizing that the game was out of reach), and McDermott did the classy thing and pulled Brackins, and started emptying the bench. Very strange coaching on Iowa's part. If I were McDermott, I'd remember that in the future Iowa games, and continue to lay the wood to them til the final buzzer.

LOTS of negativity....

I took it this way:

Gmac tried to be nice and took his foot off the gas... maybe the intern coach didn't recognize?

Personally... against your instate rival, NEVER take your foot off of the gas... beat them by 40 if you can.

I give credit for GMac doing the right thing... by being polite and Licklighter would have recognized this.....

-keep.

I agree... I chalk it up to a novice interim coach... and our coach being polite, a bit too early.

I agree Cyclonepride..... however on the last part... I doubt Coach will 'coach' against that person anytime soon... Lick would have recognized it.

I am trying hard to find that video, so I can watch it over and over this morning. Not going to lie, that choked me up.

I loved how it showed some of our tradition, and some of our great players, and great things that we have done here in Hilton. Awesome video.

Now, maybe the siren right after that could have been really nice?
