Post game thoughts

well brackins is the guy we all hoped he would develop into and looks like he is going in the right direction.

BUT come one can anyone else score......

Kansas shot lights out and we couldnt make anything

that is the story of the game

that and no one played defense that well
Yeah there is no way we should have expected to win that game with Craig doing all the scoring. Lucca not scoring till under a minute left really hurt too.

I posted this in the game thread, but I'll post it again here.

Self had an awesome gameplan. For the most part, they played Brackins straight up, but their guards were all over Staiger & Peterson. Brackins can go off for 50, but if nobody else contributes ISU is still going to lose. Garrett isn't a threat with the jump shot so they're sagging off of him. But whenever he drives into the lane KU is sending a second defender at him hard so he can't create for somebody else. Brackins really is our only multi-dimensional player. You focus on the rest of our team & take away what they do best, & we're screwed.

I don't think this is a coaching issue. I think this is an athelte issue. Plain and simple, KU has much, much better athletes. You hassle our outsider shooters, none of whom are a threat off the dribble, and you can really take them out of the game. Combine this with the fact that we shot 34.5% on the game & we didn't stand a chance. If the rest of the team knocks some shots down, this is a drastically different game. But I think KU's gameplan had a lot to do with the result of this game.

Great post! The thing we needed was Garrett or Lucca to knock down a few shots and that would've force KU to change their game plan but they didn't and kept everyone except Brackins from doing anything.

How about putting someone else besides Petersen and Haluska on the Big 12's best player. Collins abused those two.

Exactly, they weren't scoring so what's the advantage of Haluska over someone like Cam Lee? He's the only guy on the team that can keep up with Collins. I just don't understand why they don't throw him in to at least cool down a shooter on fire.

We have no good 2nd option on offense other than Brackins. I thought our post defense was pretty good, but we gave them way too many open 3s.

It didn't help that Collins was UNCANNY in the first half. That guy can ball!

KU is not very good for being 4-0 in the conference. ISU should have won this game, however Lucca couldn't shoot, DG made too many T/O's and McD had no (decent) game plan to stop Collins - there only player worth a ****.

This was frustrating loss to take, because I felt ISU was a better team - they just can't execute.....don't know if you blame that on the players or their preperation.
I disagree with Collins, I though we shut him down in the second half, it was just that Aldrich started playing. I think that Collins had 18 at half-time and ended up with 25 maybe...

The problem is Craig is the only player athletic enough to play in the Big XII and I'm dead serious. No other player on our team would see much time on any other team. Sure we have great shooters, but they can't get open.

The only way next season will turn around is if Craig stays and Colvin, Gilstrap, Buckley and Pomlee make big impacts early.

Eik and DG would absolutely sit until they put on 25lbs. In fact I would sit them on the bench RIGHT NOW with 3 double cheeseburgers.

GM I thought did a great job in planning this one, just not the players to execute it. Collins did very little in the 2nd half, especially compared to the first. We have not a single person that could guard him regardless of the game plan, because the horses are not there. 2 senior walk-on guards vs. one of the best guards in the Big 12, I don't like our odds very well there to slow him down.

A few made shots by anyone else and this is a different game. We have to be able to own the defensive boards, and we just didn't do that. Not many guards built like Collins in NCAA, but he made our guys look small. Our defense showed what it can do when it steps up. One thing Kansas showed that is a direct result of coaching...and led to so many wide open 3's, is that is the best screening team I have seen all year.

how about chaning up your defenses. Last week against Mizzou a 2-3 zone would have been nice against their speed. Today it would have been nice to get a box and 1 to get the ball out of Collins hands. Lack of coaching is exposing these kids to match ups that don't favor them.

I thought about the box and 1 on Collins, but then thought better of it, because there wasn't one of our guys that could keep up with him.

I thought this was a well coached game.

We really needed other players to score. Any other day Lucca is a nice outside counter to Craig- but everyone has off days.

Diante had a tough day. lost the ball a couple times on the drive- he wasn't able to make KU respect his ability (option may be a better word) to drive and create.

I think the biggest contrast was that KU looked tough. Every one of the guys on the court. I don't feel like we're a "tough" team yet. More time...

Hamilton is coming along nicely. I like the looks of this team in the future if we can keep everyone together.

i think one our big problems is and ppl are prolly gonna hate me for saying this but we are playing 3 walk on guys that wouldnt play at any other big 12 school. petey, haluska, and tompson are not good big 12 players...MVC players yes...not big 12! i'm tired of watching these guys play, love there hustle and heart but that gets us no where.

Interesting how this seems to be said after nearly all of our games..."our opponent shot the lights out"...that is a hallmark of poor defense. We can play decent defense for a few seconds but we rarely can sustain solid defense for an entire possession...inevitably there is a breakdown somewhere which often leads to easy wide open shots.

KU is a good but not great team this year and this game was really never in question at all.

Self's gameplan was clearly to let Brackins get his and try to shut everyone else down...it worked pretty well.

We are far too reliant on the outside shot in our offensive sets...which leads to lower shooting percentages.

Brackins was outstanding today...very disappointed they didn't leave him in to try to get 2 more to set the Big 12 single game scoring mark.

Yep, exactly. They have players that can make up for others getting closed out. We are getting there. Brackins had a fantastic game, but he HAD to. I didnt have a problem with him being pulled. The last thing we want is him to get injured in the last 20 seconds of slop play.

Another great point, we aren't tough yet. You look at Tinsley and Horton, Stinson and Blaylock, and those guys at guard were tough and talented. We also get muscled around inside, but I think that area is starting to slowly improve.

Things are looking bad for GMac,

We have the best player in the BigXII and we still can't win? Brackins is a lottery pick, but Gmac can't make any hay. Brackins is going to be NBA next year and then were are we? Are there any other DI players on this squad? Are we really going to turn the corner next year sans Brackins? Gmac has to win now or he will never get the momentum he needs to win in the Big XII.

PS. Jamie Pollard=Matt Millon.

PPS. Dear Greg and Jamie, PLEASE MAKE ME EAT CROW! I AM BEGGING YOU!
