POOR COACHING

ISU is starting to remind me of some of those teams that used to visit Hilton during the LE era, like Maryland-Baltimore County or Loyola-New Orleans. They have great athletes, but no discipline. They play ole defense and just chuck threes whenever they see daylight!

Spin the Iowa game whichever way you want. I've heard it all. New program, new system, freshman, lack of experience, it's early with a new coaching staff, he needs to get his own players, blah, blah, blah. I've followed ISU basketball for over 30 years and have seen a lot of crappy BB, but that was pathetic!!! Morgan's teams played much better defense. Orr, Floyd and LE would have never let this happen!! What's wrong with a zone early on when Iowa is doing nothing but dunks and lay ups? Oh, by the way, Iowa is terrible also. That's two games in row now of awful defense. I thought we hired a coach that put a more organized team on the floor. The offense stunk also. I'm really disappointed with McDermott. I guess I'm supposed to be patient. With the coach making big time money, and the Big 12 around the corner, I'm finding that hard to do.

POOR Coaching...NO!....POOR Recruiting? You might have a case for poor recruiting by the talent out on the floor right now.

Every time you make a coaching change you lose one year in recruiting and if the previous regime's players leave or don't buy into the new coaches system you have a MESS for at least one or two years.

Most Clone Fans knew this was going to be a long year, and buckled up for a very bumpy ride .

Four years from now this season will be a very distant memory and the Clones will be fighting it out for a big 12 championship each and every year.

I'm still behind Coach McDermott and the players!!:yes4lo:

It's unfortunate that one should have to work for either positive or negative rep levels. Seems making comments based on getting rep points makes for bad discussion and lack of independent thinking.

I think you make a Valid POINT. Just let fans(I mean Cyclone Fans Only) have an open and frank discussion about our teams.

Just because you bash the Clones doesn't mean that you are a hawk, husker, panther or bulldog or maybe even a longhorn or aggie. Maybe these are closet fans that do this? Whats ya think?:nerd6bs:

My last negative comment to GMac was defense. I would very much like to see a zone implemented and have it as an option that can be used at any time. Iowa is a bad basketball team and they killed us inside, with a lot of dunks and open looks. No help defense for the most part. A zone would help disguise someof these defensive shortcomings, at least in these initial games.

Last night we fell into a zone defense for about 3 Iowa posessions and they scored about 3 times, which if I remember correctly, forced us into a time out. While the zone maybe effective, when run last night it looked like they had practiced it for all of 5 min on thursday..so I don't think zone is the answer.

Unfortunately, it appears you haven't learned much about college BB for your 30 years of observation. This is a talent problem resulting from the departure of a number of players last season, and the need to rely on JUCO's and walk-ons to fill up the roster.

Were you paying attention at all last year? How well did WM's zone defense work in the Big 12? It didn't, and ISU had some very talented athletes last year. The Big 12 competition shredded ISU's zone defense last year, and they will shred it again this year if ISU tries to use it. This team needs to learn the things necessary to succeed in the Big 12 and to make Cyclone BB successful in the long term.

Next time you are watching the Cyclones, open your mind along your eyes, and think about what is best for long term success of ISU BB... I would suggest that resorting to a questionable defensive scheme (i.e. zone defense) in hopes of securing state bragging rights is not in best the interest of long term success. :baffled5wh:

Why do we even have to bash the clones?

Was the game pitiful? YES
Does the offense stink? YES
Is there any defense being played? Not much

But how could anyone NOT see this coming. You have a new coach, a butt load of new players, new system, etc., etc. This year is a complete right off.

We all knew Hubalek, Grey, & Mardsen were not an inside force last year, even with McDermott coaching them (for only the last 3 months) did you really think the improvement would be substantial?? These guys have to want to play inside and right now you can clearly see Hubalek wants no part of that and Grey and Mardsen just don't have the body mass (or talent, but maybe Mardsen will get better). Cory Johnson will be a Big 12 caliber player eventually, but he is just a freshman folks. And to top it all off........who is Coach going to put in there if these guys are not performing?

Same goes for the guards. If these guys are not performing, McDermott does not have a lot of bodies to just sit these guys down to prove a point. Dunson will be a solid role player before his time is done, but Taylor and McIntosh are just fillers. Next year when Staiger (sp??), Garrett, and Boozer are here he will have a better opportunity to sit guys to prove a point.

Point is, as frustrating as it is to watch sometimes, just relax, remember who our players are (late and I mean EXTREMELY late signees), and that things will most definitely get better.

McDermott is a GREAT coach and anyone who wants to throw him or his staff under the bus, this early in his first year, needs to have there head examined.

Do you think that Hubalek shooting 3's was part of Mac's plan? Was Grey getting burned repeatedly part of our defense?

The coach can't play the game, he can only prepare players for it. If they don't listen to him (risky passes, 1 on 2 situations, blown defense, poor shot decisions, etc.) then there is only so much he can do. It was clear that Mac was frustrated for most of the game. The lack of experience is killing us.

The passing was the worst I have seen on TV in 2 years. We look like we stare at the person we are going to throw it to, then we lightly toss it and watch it be intercepted. Stupid passing is the only word for it.

Some of the things we witnessed last night should never occur, not even in ninth grade. I strongly beliee the coach needs to get right in the middle and stop the nonsensical play. I do not call this good coaching by any stretch of the imagination. I expected not much, but I expected better than this. The bigs are probably worse this year than they were last year. I thought we had a chance to have them play better. Now, I wait to see them graduate so Brackins and Thompson can start. Jiri just loafs around on the outside mperimeter. That is just a waste. It puts NO pressure on the defense. Heck, we cannot even dribble around the top of the perimeter without running into each other. Just pathetic and not acceptable. We probably went down from our #181 rating pre Iowa in Sagarin to below #200. There are only 300 teams in the whole country.

I am already drinking. McD likes man to man. Excvept this team needs more options than man to man. Brock might get more playing time if he makes no mistakes. I think Mike dribbles the ball too high. He invites wandering hands. Then he dribbles right into trouble. And then the people he passes to cannot catch a pumpkin. I see many people committing turnovers. I see nightmares of people committing turnovers. I see coach pulling his hair out in anguish. Sad. Say it - Iowa is not good,

Ohio State is good. Projection: 30 turnovers in Columbus. Oden will be like the 7-0 45 year old looking GOD he is and rebound 15-20.

For Bradley on 16 Dec, their guards weigh 210-215 and one is 6-5. They have scopred 74 points or more each game. We need Mike to light it up.

I agree, first time ISU went tot he zone Adam H hit a 3. One of his only outside shots at that point. I don't know what the answer is. But zone or no zone seams to oversimplify the greater issues at hand. Hate to say it but we don't have any studs. Sorry, I'm Clone to the bone but? Frustrated. :baffled5wh:

No studs till next year. Guess we better play bball this year like Univ Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Better yet, think Butler helter skelter.

I don't think it was so much poor coaching but rather poor playing... I think the gameplan was ok for what we have to work with, i.e. no bigtime post players thus resulting in a lot of 3's from outside. What I can't take anymore is watching Hubalek shoot 3's... let alone be on the floor... he really sucks so far.

I agree that it takes time and patience. I watched the game down here and I was disappointed but I have faith in the changes that have been made...it takes time. Go Cyclones!

POOR COACHING!?!?! What?? We all know this year is going to be rough. When we win we have great players, when we lose the coaching stinks. Whatever!

-Cory Johnson does not appear to be a "Big 12 caliber" player. He is in way over his head. With hard work and great improvement, he will only be a marginal player at best.

You're wrong about Cory Johnson. He could've went to other schools like Wisconsin, Marquette, or Iowa, but he chose ISU. Cory is a true freshmen straight out of highschool.. there was no prep-school league for him. He's one of the more talented players on the team. The kid has amazing foot-work which is really important for a big man and a soft touch. Plus he has a motor that won't stop. I just couldn't disagree with you more on Cory.

I just gotta take exception with this comment too. Cory is just a Freshman. He's our only big that came in this year with a little bulk on him. Just give GMac a couple years to coach him and then sit back and enjoy.

Acody I'm going to back off the neg rep button and just tell you're sounding like a fool. With the team we got we're going to have LOTS of games like this during the season. Coach will need 2-3 years to get his players and system in place. That's just a fact of what happens during a coaching change(firing). You'd think you'd know that after 30+ years of watching basketball.

With that said...yes, we played liked complete doggy doo the whole game. BUT, I'm expecting several games like that this year.

Are you better at your job now compared to the first day you went to work??? Get realistic.....half of the starters left.....new recruits were not the cream of the crop.....this team deserves a chance to learn a system and develop some chemistry. Have you forgotten that Morgan was dismissed because the sense was the program was in a downward spiral. I don't believe Kansas State has won all there games. CONGRATLULATIONS for wanting your cake and eating it too!!!!!
