In four years? I realize that Baylor was in a worse place than ISU (as hard as that is to imagine) was when they each took over, but compare Fred's first 4 years to this:

8-21, 3-13, 11th
9-19, 1-15, 12th
4-13, 4-12, 12th (NCAA sanctions, no non-conference play)
15-16, 4-12, 11th
------------------
21-11, 9-7, T-4th, NCAA
24-15, 5-11, 9th, NIT

Even though Baylor was worse to start with, I don't think you can say that even Drew's first 6 years were head and shoulders above what Fred has done in his first 4.

I agree with you that Fred did it much quicker but the total job that Drew did is much better. Plus Drew has now made it to 3 sweet 16s and 2 Elite 8s (with a chance this year at a 3rd).

Don't get me wrong, I think Fred deserves a raise but I think Drew has done one of the best rebuilding jobs of all time.

Fred has to make more than $1.2 million, right? Didn't we give him a raise to something like $2 million?

His deal averages $2 million over the next 10 years. I think he makes $1.5 this year and it increases by $100k every year.

I think we increase his pay to $2.2-$2.5 million after the season and let it escalate by $100k each year. Basically he gets a $1 million raise now and an extra $5-$7 mil over the life of the 10 year deal.

I am wondering if his contract has incentives for NCAA appearances, Big 12 titles, Sweet 16, etc... if not it should have! Reward him for an amazing job and he's just starting!

That said I don't think you can put a price tag on Fred's love for ISU, Ames and the community. Such an amazing story...

Look, if Mayor doesn't want a raise, then I'm sure it's still important to him that his assistants are well paid.

Get it done.

I know it is difficult to quantify the financial benefit that ISU's basketball success has on the universities revenues, but I have no doubt that the free advertising that our basketball success is generating can more then justify paying Fred $3 million per season.

We need to get Fred to at least that level if not higher. Now is not the time to be frugal. Fred has the potential to make ISU a national brand on par with North Carolina and Kansas. That leads to increased enrollment, attendance, ticket prices, tuition fees, licensing fees, etc. Furthermore, realignment is far from over, so you can't underestimate the significance of making ISU as valuable a brand as possible.

The biggest mistake ISU could make is to fail to recognize the return on investment that Fred presents. Put together a cost benefit analysis and pay Fred accordingly.

Why does everybody think that Fred is unhappy with how much he is being paid?

I don't think anyone is. This thread is simply a fear reaction that we could lose him if we don't appreciate him. The administration needs to reflect what the fans know. There is no other coach for us.

Ok, let's base it on what Scott Drew has done at Baylor. That's a more likely comparison.

I'm glad you aren't our AD. You probably wanted a lifetime contract and top in the Big 12 for Rhoads after his first couple of years too.

What would you have given Scott Drew? $5 mil per year for 10 years? Like it or not, he has done a much better job at Baylor so far than Fred has at Iowa State.

I love Hoiberg but let's not get carried away because we made it to one sweet 16.

We are not competing with other schools for Fred, we are competing with the NBA only. If you don't think that their have been serious NBA offers that have been turned down by Fred you are mistaken. I know for a fact that there is a coach doing well in the NBA that was the franchises second choice for the job. Fred was their first. So to compare him to other college coaches isn't correct at all. If you can't see that this ISU program is on a direct flight to the moon and beyond I can't help you. Fred is the cause for all this, this is only the beginning. There isn't another coach on this earth that can do this and sustain it at ISU like Fred can IMO. He loves ISU more than a Tim Floyd or Larry Eustachy type. This is just the start. I am not trying to be a **** here, I just know a few things.

This. Fred is well on his way to making ISU known as a national basketball power, so JP needs to pay him what he deserves and trust him completely to run his own basketball program without any interference from anybody. Do that and I think Fred stays a long time.

Nobody believes Fred is unhappy. Everybody believes Fred is worth a heck of a lot more. Heck, Fran makes more.

What ISU does give is guaranteed money. We won't be firing him in the next 10 years. So that's 20+ million guaranteed.

In the NBA you get a shorter contract, less power, and you are extremely disposable.

That's what ISU has as an advantage.

I don't know why so many people get hung up on the $/year figure when guaranteed money is exactly what matters, like you say.

Do you all know how many NBA teams have replaced their head coach since Fred was hired here? All but four, and only one of them (Greg Popovich) has been with their current team since before 2008. Even Pop has only ever been offered four- or five-year extensions. Only seven current coaches have received a contract extension. Only two have received more than two contract extensions.

Maybe that "sink or swim" mentality presents an appealing challenge for a competitive guy like Hoiberg, but until he says so, none of us has any reason to think otherwise.
