I have to agree with the Hoppe love. I did not really know a whole lot about him until this tourney but I've loved watching him play.

How many of the other teams were playing B/C level players in this tourney? I'd have to think US could see a rise in FIFA rankings with a win here based on who is playing.
FIFA rankings are formulaic with only results as inputs. Winning will help us up the rankings, but it can’t tell a “C” team from an “A” team or a 1-0 win from a 7-0 win.

I saw an unofficial FIFA rankings calculator, but it has us up to #10 just behind Mexico still. But we were the international team with the second most points added this year behind Italy.

Wow, it has been way too long since I've paid attention to the USMNT. I look at these names, and I'm like:

When does the next hex start? I need to start watching again.

I'd recommend it. They are much younger and better conditioned than we've seen for quite a while. There's plenty of room for improvement, but it's nice to see some swagger out there.

The first set of WC qualifiers are at the beginning of September, and they changed the qualifying format this cycle. It’s no longer the Hex, there are 8 teams in the final round of qualifying. Each team will play the other 7 home and away for 14 total games. Given the compressed calendar, they are going to cram 3 qualifying matches into almost every international window over the next year so I would expect to see a lot more rotation than usual. The first three matches will be:

Sept 2 @ El Salvador
Sept 5 Canada (in Nashville)
Sept 8 @ Honduras

The great thing about jumping on board this iteration of the USMNT is that our core players are all 23 years old or younger. Get to know them now and they will most likely be a part of the team for the next 10 to 15 years.

Gianluca Busio’s transfer to Venezia has been finalized. Sam Vines is heading to Belgium with Royal Antwerp. Josh Sargent has been pulled out of training with Werder Bremen due to an imminent transfer to a foreign club. Sargent has had rumors swirling that he’s headed to newly promoted Norwich in the Premier League.

Joe Scally, an 18-year old who moved to Germany in January from NYCFC, is starting at LB for Monchengladbach today against Bayern Munich. Chris Richards is on the bench for Bayern as well.

Josh Sargent scored 2 today for Norwich in their Carabao Cup match against Bournemouth. Also, Jordan Siebatcheu/Pefok advanced to the Champions League group stage today with his club Young Boys.

The roster for the first set of WC qualifiers is likely to drop sometime in the next couple days. Pulisic missed this weekends Chelsea match with a positive COVID test, so his status for the USMNT is up in the air at this point.

Brendan Aaronson has made an awesome start to his year at Red Bull Salzburg. Just scored in Champions League Qualifying again for them. Pretty impressive. The U.S. is going to have so many Americans actually playing the Champions League and they're all young. Fun times to think about the future of U.S. soccer and soccer in this country. If we could just produce a true poacher of a number nine like a Zlatan, Haaland or Drogba. Wow, the midfield and forwards would have an unreal attacking talent. Still, lots of great mids and forward-wingers in the U.S. side for years to come which should mean some good results!

I know it was just an MLS all star game but Matt Turner saved 3 penalties against Liga MX. I would honestly put him above Zack Steffens in a must win game for the USMNT. Turner has just been incredible this summer.

There are reports that Ricardo Pepi will be joining the US for the upcoming qualifiers. He’s 18, played for both the US and Mexico at youth levels, and has scored 9 goals for FC Dallas so far this season.

Roster drop:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Nottingham Forest/ENG; 7/0), Zack Steffen (Manchester City/ENG; 23/0), Matt Turner (New England Revolution; 7/0)

DEFENDERS (10): George Bello (Atlanta United; 3/0), John Brooks (Wolfsburg/GER; 43/3), Sergiño Dest (Barcelona/ESP; 11/1), Mark McKenzie(Genk/BEL; 6/0), Tim Ream (Fulham/ENG; 45/1), Antonee Robinson (Fulham/ENG; 12/0), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United; 9/3), James Sands (New York City FC; 6/0), DeAndre Yedlin(Galatasaray/TUR; 64/0), Walker Zimmerman(Nashville SC; 17/2)

MIDFIELDERS (5): Kellyn Acosta (Colorado Rapids; 37/2), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig/GER; 14/1), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy; 29/7), Weston McKennie (Juventus/ITA; 24/7), Cristian Roldan(Seattle Sounders; 25/0)

FORWARDS (8): Brenden Aaronson (RB Salzburg/AUT; 7/3), Konrad de la Fuente (Olympique Marseille/FRA; 1/0), Jordan Pefok (BSC Young Boys/SUI; 6/1), Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas; 0/0), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea/ENG; 38/16), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund/GER; 8/4), Josh Sargent (Norwich City/ENG; 16/5), Tim Weah (Lille/FRA; 13/1)

Pretty much as expected. Pepi is on there. Berhalter will name a game day 23 for every match, but that 23 can change from game to game. Given these 3 match windows where you have to play 3 in 7 days there will definitely be some rotation.

The road qualifiers this time around will be on Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network. So look for the El Salvador match there on Thursday. I know people like to get worked up every 4 years about the TV broadcasts for these road qualifiers, but keep in mind that US Soccer has zero control over those rights, the home team gets to decide who to partner with for TV deals. And frankly, the current situation is much, much better than having to figure out how to get beIN sports.
