Strokes his ego ala "I could do it at ISU and no one else is good enough to"
1,000,000% my speculation here:
Campbell thought he could pick his successor (he was statue-worthy and all!) & immediately played this card
Jamie: Thanks, but nah - hence the extremely speedy in announcing new coach
Campbell: sour grapes, dgaf

Does this help player retention? Absolutely not. Will we retain more? Yes, but remains to be seen how many (which is how it works now)

Coach Rogers is pulling some former players to Ames, so he's also developed good loyalty with existing players as well as new recruits.

We will be fine.

Or maybe, just maybe, there a no conspiracies and this is just what can happen with coaching changes.

While the portal wasn't in place when Campbell came to ISU, how many recruits did he poach from Toledo at that time?

It's been inferred by many in the know Campbell had his inner circle, which where his ultimate loyalty resided. Candle was going to be the OC for him until Toledo hired him as HC, then Campbell did not raid his recruits. Loyalty

Campbell did not get his man the HC job in Ames; therefore, he's made a more concerted effort to get select players & recruits shifted over. But this is also a sign of the times, too.

Totally agree. It's both imo, too.

I'm sure Campbell wanted his guy to take over at ISU like he got at Toledo. And it's also just a sign of the times in modern CFB.

I think a lot of ISU fans forget that a few of these players who are announcing they're transferring would have done so anyway, even if Campbell would've stayed. It's just the CFB/NIL landscape now.

We’re also taking recruits from WSU, it’s just the way it is.

Yep. And they’ll take them from the South Dakota States of the world. You just gotta accept for now that your roster will do a pretty good flip every year, albeit not like this years. Good players and coaches will get bought and you have to recruit and develop to replace them. We are the Milwaukee Brewers in a LA Dodger world.

I think Campbell going after our players bc Mouser didn't get the job is natural, not necessarily some vengeful act. If his buddy was here, he would be less likely to take anyone. I think that would be true of a former assistant that was at any school.
