No Howard in 2018 though.

Guzan is only 29, plays for Aston Villa in the EPL. He certainly could not age as well as Howard, but I think it's too early to count him out as the for the US in the next couple of years. Not to mention the influx of talent at most other positions is better than it has been. Just look how well Yedlin, Green, and Brooks played in relief. Not to mention Altidore and Bradley will likely still be around. Its easy to see how the US could be better in 2018 all around.

Hard to discount Howard's performance today, just trying to will the team to a win against all odds. I really think with Altidore playing this team is so much more potent offensively, he gives so much even when he's not putting the ball in the goal. Losing him caused Klinsmann to have to juggle the positions too much, and you could tell the guys were not quite on the same page in some of their positions. Overall I think it's pretty easy to see how the US could be even better all around in 2018. Sucks that Russia will be like 10 hours ahead of the US in four years :/

We could have used this from Howard today:

So EPL is on NBC Sports Network, right?

I thought I saw that the MLS' new deal with ESPN includes more broadcasts, including a dedicated time slot weekly.

Trying to decide which league I will follow more closely. Hoping to do so and get into the sport.

IMO the quality difference makes the EPL much more entertaining to watch. And yes it's on NBCSN now and they have terrific coverage, lots of live matches, good recap shows, condensed games, highlight shows, they really do a fantastic job.

I can't watch Wondo's terrible miscue without being filled with rage.

I'm pretty sure one assistant ref had an offsides flag raised, correct? Almost better to not win on a mistake than a botched call. Now THAT would have filled me with rage...

If you are wanting to watch World Cup quality soccer, you will need to watch English Premier League, Bundesliga (Germany), Spain's league (name is slipping me), or Serie A (Italy). MLS isn't close to being on that level yet, but it is getting better every year.

I studied abroad in Rome in 2000, I picked AS Roma since Lazio won the title the year before…then lucked out that Roma won it the year I was there and I went to quite a few games. Was a huge fan for the next four or five years when Fox Sports had tons of Serie A…then there was a period it was a difficult to find on tv here…by the time it was easy to watch again (lots of games on ESPN3 as of about 5 years ago) I'd kind of lost connection with "my" team since the players were almost totally different and I'm not one to jump from team to team.

Long story short…if I were a new fan and wanted to pick a pro team randomly to follow I'd pick one that's on TV the most.

Yeah, it wasn't even close to offsides, would have been brutal.

I saw half of an MLS game last week. The quality is pretty poor. Landon Donovan was playing but he was mainly just waking around for most of what I saw.

EPL > MLS. The problem is most US fans give soccer a try, they watch MLS and think it's top quality soccer. Not even close.

If you are interested in watching soccer during a season start at EPL.

It's funny, Started off watching MLS then went up to EPL. I think my first actual MLS game was Seattle's first MLS game. Been a fan of them ever since. The crowds are insane.

It's still probably a good idea to watch MLS anyway this year and next year. Fox And ESPN paid a record 70 million for MLS rights (and US Soccer) which starts next year. Let's not make them regret it.

Fox is making me nervous for the Women's World Cup (US Women are favored to win it, even if Solo cannot play.) and MLS coverage next year because I think they have the capability to stop Soccer right in it's tracks because Gus Johnson is their Top PBP. He's awful at Soccer. And the sad thing is that there's a great American PBP working for MLS on NBC/NBCSN, John Stone (Correct me if I'm wrong, I think that's his name.). Why won't either ESPN or FOX go after the guy?

The one positive is that MLS plays in the time of the year when only MLB is going. I definitely watch more MLS because I'm not a big baseball fan and my local team is on tv on the weekends during mlb-only period of major us sports.

What if the best US athletes played soccer? How good would we be? Just imagine AP playing soccer

It's as much about our top athletes as that we have so many popular sports. For most of these top world cup nations the second most popular sport is a very distant #2…and often it's something like F1 racing or cycling and not even a comparable sport. It's not like here where fans transition from football to basketball/hockey to baseball and now more and more following soccer too. Its just a nearly yearlong obsession with one major sport and the everything else is such a distant #2.

You could make the same argument that the NBA or NFL would be much more talented if the best athletes all grew up wanting to play football or basketball.

FIFA has made the argument that MLS should change it's scheduling so that it matches the other European premier leagues - fall through spring instead of spring through fall. What FIFA doesn't realize is, while interest in soccer is growing in America, scheduling soccer against the NFL, NCAA football, NBA, NCAA basketball, and NHL would kill it. Not to mention FIFA wasn't exactly fond of the qualifier against Costa Rica with a half foot of snow on the ground. So many games would run into that.

MLS actually is doing this the right way - only competing against MLB, keeping harsh winters out of it, and slowly increasing the quality of play.

Also La Liga, Bundesliga, or even Serie A leagues all beat the hell out of MLS.
