*** Official FIFA World Cup 2014 Thread ***

For those that have found themselves really enjoy watching the US in the World Cup, keep in mind that international soccer doesn't just disappear until the next World Cup. I'm all for people jumping right in and giving MLS or any other league a try. I've got some thoughts on that I'll share later. But even if you don't find a club or league that captures your attention, there will still plenty of chances to cheer on the US before the next World Cup in Russia. Here's a list of the international competitions that the US will be involved in leading up to 2018:

1) 2015 U-20 World Cup
2) 2015 Gold Cup
3) 2016 Olympics
4) 2016 Copa America Centenario
5) 2016 World Cup qualifying first stage
6) 2017 Confederations Cup (by virtue of winning either the 2015 Gold Cup or playoff)
7) 2017 Gold Cup
8) 2017 U-20 World Cup
9) 2017 Hexagonal World Cup qualifying

Obviously, not every one of those competitions will involve the full senior national team. But there is plenty of fun stuff in there to get the old red, white, and blue pumping through the veins. Following the USMNT year round is quite a bit of fun. Qualifying for the next World Cup will begin in 2016, and even before that you've got a Gold Cup, Olympics, and Copa America to keep things interesting.

Have we qualified for the Olympics?

Also, Copa America Centenario will be AWESOME.

I think the qualifying tournament for the London games for CONCACAF happened in March of 2012 so I'd expect the qualifying for 2016 to occur around the same time. Let's just hope the US can qualify this time instead of flaming out like 2 years ago.

I just realized Yedlin, Green, and Brooks will all be under 23 for the 2016 Olympics. Don't know how that will work with the 2016 Copa America also, but 2016 could be a fun summer.
 
Those other tournaments are either snoozefests for the young kids getting experience, money grabs by fifa or concacaf, or more mellow drama than actual drama in the cup qualifiers. Even the Copa America looks interesting and competitive, but it was brought to America just to make dollars for the football associations in South America.

The World Cup is about the biggest cash grab you can imagine. I don't think that negates it's ability to be an entertaining viewing experience.
 
I think Klinnsman puts a very good squad out there for the Gold Cup, he won't want to have to win a playoff to get the Confed bid.

U-20 is obviously all Under 20 players. So Julian Green and Zelalem? I guess there will be some players that will be on the national team in 4 years.

Gold Cup will probably be 2nd team players with some 1st teamers mixed in.

Olympics is usually youth team, no offense but it's mostly pointless.

Copa America is all the Americas teams (US, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, etc.). The next tournament to get into, might be Howard's last NT appearance.
