School districts to the south of the Cedar Rapids area already announcing early dismissals for today (including Iowa City and Clear Creek-Amana). So many Tuesday evening activities were cancelled in this area that didn't need to be...I am guessing school leaders are nervous about making the wrong call today.

That’s actually how it works. You have cold, below-freezing temperatures at the surface, with warmer, above-freezing air aloft. The precipitation forms as rain (because it’s above freezing), falls through the colder air below, then freezes on below-32-degree surfaces.
Actually precip starts as snow/ice, falls through warm air melting and the refreezing as mentioned.

Ok, nerd. :p

(I kid, I kid, thanks for the clarification, I do tend to oversimplify things - sometimes too much)
I have two degrees in meteorology and have taught basic meteorology courses. The shifting layers of warmer and colder air make the type of precipitation hard to predict. And why just a few miles can make big differences in what precipitation you get.

Basically all schools in the Cedar Rapids area are now dismissing early...cancelling all evening activities! If you are going to Ames tonight from this area...BE SAFE!

Not to brag or anything ;) Welcome to the board and the weather thread!

It was our garbage and recycling day yesterday with those winds, so I didn't set them out for the 2nd time in the last 3 recyling days, but I put my 5 water bottles out in a protected area and 3 of those damn things blew away. Ended up finding one, but they go for $7 a pop, so that sucked a bit.

Looks optimistically like the freezing rain and ice issues are staying down south towards the border and not up in the Ames area, transitioning more to just boring snow in central IA?

Is Cedar Rapids getting it significantly worse than the Des Moines metro? None of those schools have changed anything.

This winter has ******* sucked and it just started.
Too much complaining about the winter so far. It doesn’t even start until December 21 and forecasts that far out are often not reliable. As far as the late fall, I agree it hasn’t been that pleasant.:):)
