***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I know we got an above .500 record and all but out of pure boredom since I have a minute, here would be my 2024 team:

C - Gomes/Barnhart (9.25 Million)
1B - Mancini/Mervis (7ish Million)
2B - Hoerner (11.5 Million)
3B - Chapman (25 Million)
SS - Swanson (25 Million)
OF - Happ/PCA/Davis/Suzuki ($42 Million)
Util - Morel/Madrigal

SP - Ohtani ($50 Million)
SP - Stroman (21 Million)
SP - Steele
SP - Wesneski
SP - Brown/Wicks

Puts you at $190 million pre-arbitration and not counting at bullpen. You’d have $47 million to address those areas
I think you are low on what Ohtani is going to get and Stroman is going to decline his $21 million dollar option next year unless he either sucks or gets injured.

I may be wrong but I believe we are at $180 million committed to next year not including ~ $20 million towards arbitration. So, worst case, we’re at $200 with $37 million until we hit luxury cap ($237 million next year)

However

Releasing Hendricks and Bellinger opens up $19.5 million, giving, next worst case, $56.5 million.

Easily enough to afford Shohei.

My next want would be getting Matt Chapman. I figured he’d cost about $20 million but he’s off to a torrid start and if he keeps it up, is probably out of our range.

In the instance we need the money, I’d be pushing to get Taillon out of here. I have concerns he won’t live up to the $18 million a year as much as any prospect could do for a much cheaper expense.
Taillon isn't going anywhere soon. Stroman will opt out unless we can come to some sort of an extension.

There's more than enough money to get Shohei and if guys like Wicks and Brown are pushing for a rotation spot, even better. Smyly will still be around next year but can start the transition of one of those guys if they force it.

Offense didn't get the job done today but just keep on winning series. 7 of the next 10 vs. the Dodgers.

Cubs blew a shot to add more runs in the 8th and then Fulmer gags away a 1 run lead in the 9th to lose the game. Argh.

It’s early, but Fulmer doesn’t look to be the answer at closer.

That's what happens you neglect to sign a closer. That's 2nd time already this year the starter has gone 6+ shutout innings and the bullpen implodes.

Yep. I wonder if we have any potential closer in the minors that is close to reaching the Big Leagues?
I love Keegan Thompson. Wouldn’t hate him getting a shot at it. We already have Alzolay as a guy that can eat multiple innings if needed

Was pulling up the standings to see where they stood compared to the rest and saw that the Rays already have a positive 72 run differential. Next highest is the brewers at 28.

We might be........ good?
I mean, if we can get pitching like Stro and Steele have been dealing and Smyly has been solid and JT looked the best yesterday…then yes! Doesn’t hurt either that Wisdom is on one, really helps. Plus Seiya and the kids in Iowa are close!

I think with this lineup, 90 losses is likely. This lineup isn't going to give you much over 162 games, just too many career minor leaguers.

Genuinely have no clue who you could be talking about unless you’re trolling…our top 8 guys with at bats this year are proven MLB players and that doesn’t include Suzuki. Last years team, sure, but this years team is full of proven MLBers, they just aren’t high profile

Its too early to get too excited so I will remain pessimistic until this roster proves me wrong. They have some 2015 vibes but I still think they are 2 years away from everything falling into place at the right time to have the kind of season they had in 2016. The pitching in the system is ahead where it was in 2015 but the top hitting prospects have not made it up to the big league quite yet.

Exactly. I wouldn't go predicting 108 wins, but nobody is doing that.
88+ isn't out of reach, maybe even likely. These guys are all right.

I would say 2015 is pretty accurate sans Arrieta - our only holes at the moment for next year is a CF and an Ace. I also wouldn’t hate a 3B and let Wisdom be our corner platoon/DH
