Offical Big12 Championship thread

As for Nationals, Cael will have these guys going. Having a disappointing performance like this will make it pretty easy for him the next two weeks to get these guys motivated.

Also, I saw that Beatty may have tweeked his knee. I assume it will be fine in two weeks but he needs to win his match tomorrow to auto qualify. I know he's not one of their big time guys but they've got to be a little worried.

Damn straight. It hurts, but it is still a Big 12 championship. No one will remember that it was a split championship in a couple of years.

Hell, who am i kidding. It is college wrestling. It will be lucky to make the paper tomorrow.

But the key is that Z came up huge over a pretty tough opponent. Congrats Cyclones for 3 in a row!!

Exactly, Z has struggled with the Mizzou wrestlers earlier in the year. It was nice to see him pull that one out the way he did.

Looks like we might split it...Nebraska deserves it a hell of a lot more than us imo...
Why do you say that? We had seven in the finals, how many did Nebraska have? How many will we send to the NCAA? Listening to some of you guys **** and moan you sound like the team OWES it to YOU to do their best. Be a fan and support your team. We just had 2 champions and 5 second place winners. The guys that lost were to either top ranked or second ranked opponents and damn good wrestlers in their own right. I am as disappointed as the next guy that we didnt win but I will not come down on the wrestlers because of it.

Just once I want something to go to plan. ISU could be 30 point favorites in any sport and find a way to **** it up.
Isnt this the third championship in a row? I know we tied for this one but do the other two count for anything or would you just rather have something to whine about?

Some of you guys make me sick. If we dont win the National Championship by throwing our hats into the ring because, you as a fan, are owed it because you are a fan. You come on here and second guess the effort, second guess the coach, whine about the refs. I understand being upset but pull your own head out of your *** before you start typing. Or maybe do some research and have a few facts.

I'm talking about all ISU sports. ISU finds new ways to lose on a weekly basis.

There is no second guessing. It was choke job plain and simple.

Funny how the Mens basketball team won today, the womens basketball team won today and the wrestling team was co champion of the BXII. Boy it doesnt take much to impress you does it.
And by the way. We tied, we didnt LOSE!

Do you really want me to list all of the game ISU has blown is recent history? Really? Cause there are a lot.

It was a solid Cyclone day!

I think the upset factor comes in from having the wrestling tourny all but sown up, and then finding a way to need to squeak back into a tie. I understand this one. It was frustrating to watch.

I say that because we're better than Nebraska...and all we had to do to beat them was have our #1 nationally ranked wrestler beat a guy that he's already defeated twice this year...we also entered the finals with 2 more wrestlers than Nebraska and a lead, but couldn't hold onto it...so I'll say it again, Nebraska deserved it more than us.

People are upset because our wrestlers have underachieved to this point this year, and Nationals are all that is left...do you think they've achieved up to their potential so far??? I hope not.

How many of our guys were ranked ahead of the other wrestler? Do you know how hard it is to beat a wrestler time and time again who is close to your level? If I remember correctly he was rated Second. Put yourself in their shoes before you start calling them out.

We didn't need to wrestle great tonight to win the conference outright, we just had to go 3-4, or go 2-5, and have our #1 ranked wrestler win...and we couldn't do it...

We didn't need to wrestle great in the midland finals, or even decent to win the title...we just needed to go 1-4 on the night...we couldn't do it...

Then there was the national duals....

Nebraska really benefitted from wrestling at the Coliseum. It was Load, it was tight, and they really FEAD off the crowd. I'm just glad we won our 3rd Title, who cares if we tied.

I just hope we can put it together for Nationals.

Do the B12's come to ISU in 2010 or 2011? Next year is either Norman or Ames.

Firefox has a spell checker...benefitted, load fead, wow.

I was at the meet yesterday and came away disappointed with how our guys performed. I have been to several duals up in Ames this year and to be honest some of our guys just looked flat. Duke came out flat in his prelim match and then again started slow in his wrestle back. The thing that concerns me is our style on the mat. All day yesterday match after match our guys just seemed to lay back and not go on the attack during the first and second periods. Then only in the 3rd period would our guys come to life with about 30 to 40 seconds remaining. The only exception to that was Fanthorpe. That kid really gets after it. Varner even in his semifinal match came out with a total lack of energy. I was not surprised at all with his loss in the finals. Sanderson looked totally outclassed in a couple of his matches in the wrestle backs only advancing on a come from behind move scoring back points with under 10 seconds to go in the 3rd period. He then got totally dominated in the 3rd place match losing by a major decision. Our saving grace was once again "Z" who somehow always finds a way to save our butts when all the chips are down. We have to figure something out and quick before Nationals because if we head to St. Louis and give the same effort that we gave in Lincoln yesterday it is going to be another disappointing trip.

On that note give Nebraska plenty of credit because their guys went out there and did what they needed to do. All in all we did win a co-championship but I think our 2 for 7 performance in the finals showed that we easily should have won this championship outright. A special thanks should be given to the ISU women's gymnastics team that marched in with signs in hand right before the finals started. They started some cheers and tried to get the ISU fans to make some noise. It was great to see them show up to support their fellow Clone athletes and I hope the Cyclone faithful that were there will show up next weekend to return the favor when they host the Big XII Championships.

The only really sour performance I saw last night was Varner. I expected Ward and Mueller to lose, and Fanthorpe was jobbed. Varner should not have lost at all. He looked tired and somewhat lazy to me last night.

This hits it spot on. I had the same feeling sitting in those stands yesterday.

Varner looked terrible in both of his matches and spent more time waiting for his opponent to make a move than shooting. It was disappointing because all year Varner played cat and mouse with all of his opponents because he plain outclassed them. Not so yesterday.

I was telling the people I was with that we needed to steal one of the lower weights, have Mizzou win 2 of 3 vs Nebraska or have Ward steal his match because I didn't trust Varner. No one believed me, but unfortunately his last two losses prior to yesterday were both chokes and they were burned in to my head.

What has happened to Cyler this season? He went from Big 12 champ at 157 last year to barely pulling off fourth place this year. I remember reading an article a few weeks ago about some guy on the wrestling team that is a former judo athlete. Cyler had some comment like how it was great that the judo guy had taught him some new moves that he could apply in wrestling matches. Maybe this "new" stuff has thrown off Cyler's game and he needs to go back to the basics. You would think if anyone could pick up on this and drill it into Cyler's head, it would be his brother, the head coach.
