Nope.

After last night, I had a similar reaction to the OP. I am a grad student with a substantial writing assignment due in a week, and my plan last night was to get a good portion of it done. I had planned to take a break from working on this paper to watch the Iowa State game, but after about an hour I turned it off and returned to writing my paper, and in all honesty felt guilty for having wasted that hour watching that debacle.

I see the OP's point, there are only so many hours in the day, and sometimes I wonder why I spend 4 hours a week watching that poor excuse for basketball. That's time I could be spending with my wife, working on homework, or hell, even cleaning the house (which would be more pleasant than watching the basketball team).

After last night, I had a casual conversation with a friend, and after complaining about how bad the team looked last night he posed the question "Why do you still watch the games?" Try as I may, I really had no answer.

I am to the point where I could save myself the two hours, check out the box score, and figure out exactly what happened. Craig will have played hard, and gone 6-14 with a handfull of rebounds, and a handful rebounds he probably should have grabbed. Marquis will have about 16 points 10 boards, but the vast majority of those will come in the first half. Diante's numbers will probalby look better than his actual play, as missing the easy entry pass and forced lay-ups dont appear in the stat sheet. Another uncharted stat is Dendy's points to bone-head play ratio, which has evened out at about 1-1 this year.

Will all this stop me from actually watching? Probably not. But it is getting harder to justify spending that time in front of the television when the basketball becomes increasingly worse, and other aspects of my life call for more and more of my time.

I'd hate to see what happens when you lose in real life.

I'm guessing if he "lost" as much at his day job as ISU has been losing, he'd not have a job.

This guy is spending $3,500 a year to watch crap basketball. Would you pay $3,500 to watch these guys? When season ticket holders disappear that's when changes are made, like it or not.

The problem is, it is more frequent than "sometimes". The mistakes occur over and over again, and they seem to take forever to correct, if they ever are corrected. That all falls on coaching, weather you like it or not. This coaching staff is recruiting these players, and they are responsible for the product that is on the court.

Correct.

I am always amused that when people stop investing their money to watch a bad product, they're suddenly a bad, horrible fan. Could a person that continues to blindly dump money into a program that is going nowhere also be a "bad" fan then too?

IMO, neither is a bad fan - some just have a different tolerance for failure and value their money/expenses differently.

Several of us have tried to make that last point, but it doesn't get across.

I think a lot of people take it way too seriously. I don't, but I take football way too seriously.

For me, spending my money on season tickets again this year, and walking thru the crap hole weather for home games is starting to wear on me with what I see on the floor. Personally that adds into maybe how serious I take it because of that.

I personally probably won't buy season tickets next year but I won't stop from being a fan. And everyone that has an opinion on thinking "don't bash the program" are you all season ticket holders year after year? I would like to know that.

If i was a season ticket holder I wouldn't be paying anymore, until things change.

And it's not that player X missed a lay up or turned the ball over, it's that these guys aren't getting any better and are continuosly making the same mistakes and not playing with any intensity or heart. Yes, the coach can only do so much, but he's the one that recruits the players, calls the plays and tries to put them in the position to win, and McD is failing at that.

The OP has every right in the world to feel that way and it doesn't make him a bad fan because of it, so to all of you who disagree with him, perhaps you should shut your mouths. He hasn't quit on the program and is still an ISU fan, but he doesn't want to blindly throw his money and time at something that isn't getting better.

It's easier to rag on someone and toss out "you quit because Dendy missed a layup? horrible fan and that's not just Greg's fault" because that's an excellent point. But that is a very, very narrow and short-sighted view.

The reality is, we "miss a ton of layups", both literally and figuratively. Saying "you're quitting because we have not been to postseason for years, have not won a game over a ranked team and have had consecutive losing conference seasons? shame on you!" just doesn't have the same ring to it - even if it's reality.

I am thinking of doing something else for bball next year. I think the week heading up to the season opener, I am going to have someone kick me in the junk once a day for a week. After that I am going to go on about my life and not watch the games. This way I still get to experince the pain, but I will be more productive during the season.

I posted this a while ago for next year, but I am going to implement it for the rest of the season.

As long as I am healthy and gainfully employed I will continue to buy Cyclone Men's Baskeball season tickets; go to every game where I am not out of town on business; and make sure there is a butt in my seat cheering when I am out of town on businses. I will cheer my loudest and never leave a game early. I will support the team no matter what. Then again I'm a Cyclone Fanatic.

If you are "done" with ISU basketball, as the OP said, how could you be considered a fan at all, good or bad?

But are your season tickets to the tune of a few grand, as what it sounds like the OP is spending?

Im not a season ticket holder and probably never will be. After the product I see on the floor i wouldn't renew season tickets unitl the product gets better. Thats the best way to get regime change JP speaks and thinks in money so when you take money away from him you will get change. IMO

A question I have when you renew your season tickets do you get your same seats or do they get shuffled around again?

Same seats. You can request different ones, and they work with that, as far as I understand. But we like ours, so we just stay put.

Cool Id like to purchase some later in my life
but im such a homebody idk if id drive 45 min every game
but thats just me

I am done with Iowa State basketball.

Some background on me:
I am in my mid 30's and I have been going to games since the early 1980's with my dad. Back then my dad contributed to the Cyclone Club and we had two tickets in the corner of the upper deck. Gradually over time, his contributions increased and eventually plateaued to Captains level with seats in the parquet. Currently my dad and I split the cost of his tickets and Cyclone Club contributions.

This is why I am done:
I am at a point in my life where my time is just as valuable (if not more so) than money. I have 3 kids, ages 9, 7, and 4. I am no longer willing to waste my "free" time on watching, what I consider, underachieving and poorly coached basketball. I would much rather spend that time on my family and/or any number of other activities that I enjoy which do not make me angry or depressed when I am done with them. This doesn't take into account the financial investment which I am no longer willing to make.

What could bring me back:
With the current direction of the program, I see no reason to believe that things will change this year, or next. Honestly, I feel the only way this could change is if McD is let go and we some how land a coach that can take us in a new direction. I need optimism in the program to be willing to invest in it again.

Trust me, all of this makes me sad. I grew up a cyclone basketball fan, am an alumnus, and I want my kids to be fans as well. I really like McD, I just don't think he is the right fit for us. Before you rip my post apart, keep in mind this is just how I feel and I am not asking anyone else to follow in my footsteps, I just wanted to get my feelings off my chest.

Anyone else feel the way I do?

While I agree that watching this basketball team is becoming a waste of precious time, I don't agree with all the posters that need to write a manifesto after each lost. The reality of the situation is that we are not that good. If your time is better spent with your family, your dog, your mistress, whatever, that is fine and I honestly don't blame you. Personally, from here on out my viewing of games will probably be sporatic, if I'm free and a game is on I will watch, if I have plans I sure wont be breaking them to watch a game.

These manifestos are kind of funny though because they all follow the same form. They all start by informing everyone that they are truly a great Iowa State fan. Great boosters, season ticket holders, usually raising children to be Iowa State fans. They then move into the portion where they begin blasting the player and coach, and saying that they have decided that "this is it", this is the point I am done watching. Their fanhood of Iowa State has been riddled with awful moments, but this, somehow, is truly the worst of the worst. They then move to remind everyone once again that they are great fans, but a man can only take so much. These posts always seem to make me laugh.
