After last night, I had a similar reaction to the OP. I am a grad student with a substantial writing assignment due in a week, and my plan last night was to get a good portion of it done. I had planned to take a break from working on this paper to watch the Iowa State game, but after about an hour I turned it off and returned to writing my paper, and in all honesty felt guilty for having wasted that hour watching that debacle.
I see the OP's point, there are only so many hours in the day, and sometimes I wonder why I spend 4 hours a week watching that poor excuse for basketball. That's time I could be spending with my wife, working on homework, or hell, even cleaning the house (which would be more pleasant than watching the basketball team).
After last night, I had a casual conversation with a friend, and after complaining about how bad the team looked last night he posed the question "Why do you still watch the games?" Try as I may, I really had no answer.
I am to the point where I could save myself the two hours, check out the box score, and figure out exactly what happened. Craig will have played hard, and gone 6-14 with a handfull of rebounds, and a handful rebounds he probably should have grabbed. Marquis will have about 16 points 10 boards, but the vast majority of those will come in the first half. Diante's numbers will probalby look better than his actual play, as missing the easy entry pass and forced lay-ups dont appear in the stat sheet. Another uncharted stat is Dendy's points to bone-head play ratio, which has evened out at about 1-1 this year.
Will all this stop me from actually watching? Probably not. But it is getting harder to justify spending that time in front of the television when the basketball becomes increasingly worse, and other aspects of my life call for more and more of my time.
