Niang's 4th Foul

I think the fact that ISU had the game down to 7 when a phantom 4th foul was called would disagree with you. Yeah - that 14-1 run certainly didn't help matters, but down to 7 with momentum - and then the refs blow a call, Niang has to sit, and it immediately goes back to double digits.
Disagree with me how? I said it was a bad call and that the 14-1 run at the beginning killed us and we never recovered.

You know the one where he didn't touch the offensive player?

You know right about the time that ISU had cut the game to 7 and was rolling?

That 'foul' changed the course of the game. I would have really like to see what would have happened if Georges wasn't forced out of the game right there.

It was a very bad call, but the 14-1 run in the first 6 minutes before fouls were ever a concern is where the game turned, we never recovered from that.

I agree with both of you. That first 8 minutes killed us and we were really even from there on out, but that 4th foul on Georges was a bad call and killed our momentum.

But this is college basketball, bad calls happen. Gotta avoid the dumb fouls so the tough ones don't matter.

It didn't impact the game. I don't know the real number...but we gave up 60 points in the paint? Many were barely contested? That is why we lost.

Why does it have to be one or the other? There are plenty of reasons why ISU lost this game, but to act like the officiating, and Niang's fourth foul in particular, weren't among the more prominent reasons is flat-out denying reality.

I think bad calls happen at any level, but I agree, Niang is an incredibly smart player but getting 3 offensive fouls is not smart basketball.

Because we were recovering - until the 4th foul call.
I still think you're confused, how does that contradict what I was saying? I said the call had an impact on the game, obviously, but that doesn't change the fact that we got down big early and never recovered.

It's sad that he never got the respect from officials that all-American players usually get.

You mean like when they didn't call him for a foul when he underut Gill at the end of the first half? We were ridiculously lucky that didn't get called. The 4th foul call was bad, but let's not pretend like there wasnt a call that went our way too.

Rebounding and defensive lapses, just like every other loss this year. What it is.

My contradiction is the game turned on the 14-1 run. I agree you don't go down like that early if you want a decent chance of winning a game, but I also disagree - I think the game turned on Niang's 4th foul. Up until then, we were clawing our way back into the game despite that terrible first half and had all of the momentum. Once Niang's 4th foul was called, poof - momentum gone. Even when we brought Niang back in and left everything out on the floor, we could never get that momentum back. Niang's 4th foul broke the camel's back. That's when the game turned.

You think bad calls happen at every level. Brilliant analysis. Cbs could utilize your brilliant assessment. No seriously spectacular.

Some things I'd like to see improvement on next year:

1. Boxing out/rebounding
2. Defensive press
3. Getting set on screen plays

That being said, thanks Cyclones for another fun year! Going to miss Niang, McKay and Nader. Wish it would have ended better but Virginia was definitely the better team tonight.

I agree with you, I just don't think they're mutually exclusive. We got down early and, due in part to Niang's 4th foul, we were never able to recover.

Didn't watch the post game interviews - did they think the officiating was bull**** or a nonfactor?

Looked like they weren't happy about it. Could just be they were shellshocked in part. Prohm looked a bit shellshocked on one of the questions, and it might have been about Niang's 4th.
