My Thoughts from being at Jack Trice tonight

What did keep them guessing was running on 1, maybe 2 3rd and 6+ to go, and converting them.

All I know is... I'm happy I'm not on that team this week. From the few insights we've seen about his personality and goals... this is not what he was looking for and I don't think he's the type of guy that is going to accept the effort we saw tonight. I'm still holding out hope for a better disciplined team... :oo7dt:
 
What disappointed me the most is that I kept hearing about how tough the preseason conditioning was supposed to be. This team should have been in top shape and played better in the second half. If there is any hope of ANY success for the season they need to go to a no-huddle offense and shake things up a bit.

We would slowly jog in and out of huddles, and you could just tell that they weren't pissed off that they were losing to Kent State. Basically we looked like a new team with new players. Kent State definitely looked like they were more physical than us. We could not even block their linebackers.
 
I'm sure your points are all really good, JonDMiller, but what made you think we wanted to hear it from some schmuckeye homer?

No offense to Jon and the media types, but they were the ones hyping this offense as a pass first/high flying offense because thats the only way anyone thought we could be sucessful. Tonight showed that we can be successful running the ball. We just need to cut down on the penlaties.

cyfan1 - you know what those 16 out of the first 20 plays being rushed did do? It allowed us to walk down the field at will on our first second half driver with all play action calls.

Second drive started with a 10 yard run only to be called back on a holding penalty. Drive never gets going.

Third drive, three straight Bass runs get us 15 yards. On 2nd and 5 we go to the pass that people seem to be clammoring about and get a pick.

Now we're down 23-14. Two running plays gives us a very manageable 3rd and 3. Then theres the Bates play. Maybe not the best call at this time of the year, but I like the thought. Eventually, Bates will learn how to audible to a pass there when there are 8 men in the box.

The next drive - rushing gets us a managable 3rd and 4 that we convert. Then a 1 yard rush followed by two incompletions.

Final real drive had all passes.

I like that we are a running team. The OL will improve. They are young and need to get those penalties corrected. With Bass running the ball, that will open up the passing game like it did for that first second half drive. By the time we got a chance to do anything later in the half, they knew we had to pass and pressured the heck out of us.

Now now, no need.. no disrespect cometh, therefore none shall be put forth..

I think his comments were all very reasonable and pretty darn agreeable.

There is no reason to be a DB. He gave his insight and if you don't like it ignore it.
 
Meyer is not a leader, period. Get us someone in there that will take charge and lead this team, because it isn't him.

I wanted to run down on the field and grab Blythe by the facemask and ask him if he thought he was Jerry Rice or something. Block somebody!
 
My thoughts:

I think everyone just needs to calm down. You want to know what I thought of the day & night. Unbelievable atmosphere around the Jack again. What a day for tailgating and football. We could not have asked for a better day. The beer was flowing and the burgers were being eaten quicker than we could grill them. The people around seemed like they were really nice and everyone seemed to have a great time. The game didn't necessarily have the final result we wanted but there were some good things to take out of it just as there were some bad things the need corrected. Was I disappointed in the loss, yes, but you know what I'll be there again next week when the lots open. Again the beer will be flowing and the burgers will be grilled and again I'll go in a cheer my azz off for the Cardinal and Gold because I love my Cyclones and I love everything about college football from the tailgating to the game. We're all on the same side here so lets quit our ******** raise our cold one's in the air and just chill out.

It may very well be that he is doing this, but his comments made sense. I cant dispute his claims for the most part. No sense in creating hostility until he comes out and says why the hawks are superior without justification.

How many times has it been now that you have insulted Jon Miller when he post here. I kinda like the coverage we get. Some coverage is better then none.

Also, Herbie just remember some of the best Cyclones have came from the U of I. Pete Taylor and Dan McCarney.

So next time Jon comes on... Here you go... Use this.. and resist the urge.

First, JJ Bass is a very good player, and you had better not try to arm tackle him. Unfortunately, the rest of his offensive teammates weren't at his level on Thursday night.

I don't know what Bret Meyer stats were, but his two picks were pretty ugly. The DB's jumped those routes and were sitting there for nearly a full second waiting to make the pick's. Not good at all.

I was very underwhelmed with Iowa State's offensive attack. I didn't see anything that I expected. This team was vanilla, and it wasn't because they were saving pages of the playbook. No way. Bret Meyer is a better thrower on the run, IMO, rolling pockets. There was very little of that. There wasn't as much spread formation on Thursday either. I think that is going to change between now and the Iowa game. I think they go back to a drawing board some on that front. i expect them to look different offensively by the Iowa game.

They had to keep tight ends inside to help block, because the new OL is a work in progress. They looked good at times, but not consistent at all. I don't know that they get consistent by the Iowa game. I felt this aspect would be one of the reasons we would see more spreads and rollouts, but we didn't.

Todd Blythe had better finish plays as a blocker, because he cost Bass some yards and some possible long TD's.

On defense, Iowa State brought some heat on the first few possessions, but the rest of the game, they played it very conservatively. And Kent State ran up the middle every time they wanted to, which is the most demoralizing thing to a defense. Kent State chose to outsmart themselves a lot, they should have just hammered things between the tackles. Their linebackers did not look great tonight, outside of Banks early on.

Shaggy missed a 44 yarder and a 47 yarder. Not good for his confidence to start his last year.


ISU's punter is solid, that's a good thing.

If this game is any indication of the new kickoff rule affecting the game, we are in for a lot of fun this year. A lot of solid returns in this game.

ISU had the two turnovers, but KSU had two turnovers in the redzone...one of them was on the ISU 5 yard line. The score could have been a lot worse for ISU in this game.

Phil Steele picked KSU to win this game, and to win the MAC's Eastern division. ISU was a 3.5 point favorite, at home, which is basically a pickem. KSU returned 8 starters on O and D. Their OL looked solid, they were excellent in pass blocking as well as running up the middle.


I think ISU will make a lot of changes before the Iowa game, but I they don't have the 2005 DL on this year's team.

You say "before the Iowa game" more than once in this post. We play UNI next. Iowa isn't even on our radar. This team isn't good enough to play a day ahead, let alone a week.
