My conference tidbit

Re: Odd Man In

Most have us out, yet surprisingly JP seemed cool and confident on Saturday, telling us all to take the finger off the panic button. Then thanks to the OP of this thread, we find that he's hanging out in the suites with multiple US Representatives and influential boosters...I like our odds at this point...no panic and power outside the clueless media

Not to take anything away from your observation, but where else would you expect JP to hang out besides with influential boosters?

The multiple US Reps hanging with JP is where the comfort comes in...safe to say that's not the normal crowd for a matchup with UNI (our state reps being the exception of course).

I love the show of solidarity, though I would have liked to have seen a picture of all of them having drinks in the luxury box on the front page of the DMR. Or a story about ISU in the DMR involving the conference chaos would be nice... I can hear the crickets chirping....

seeing as Harkin is an alum and Grassley is a farmer, its a possibility. helps when your state has two of the most powerful senators

I think if you are pinning your hopes on two Senators(no matter how powerful there are) you are screwed already. These two can do next to nothing except beg.

Could Texas end up going to the SEC?? Wouldn't that be ironic?

Whenever I think of Texas going to the SEC, I think of this clip. SEC is Clubber and Rocky is Texas getting protected lol.

I wouldn't call two of the most powerful senators when it comes to revoking the tax-exempt status of the NCAA "beggars"...

Don't know about that. Orinn Hatch made noise about Utah and the BCS and they end up in the PAC 12.

Exactly...kind of a convenient landing wouldn't you say. Where Orin was looking to attack was on the anti-trust issues not the tax-exempt status...the issues are plenty when looking to attack...

Bottom-line, I don't think any football-playing school in a BCS conference is going to be left out or there will be political he// to pay.

Because with nothing else going on this country right now, they should be worrying about football.

Because they can only deal with one issue at a time?

Personally id rather they mess with football. At least they have a chance of not ******* that up, as its already ****ed up beyond measure.

Actually, in a sense, they should be.

While I'm not necessarily convinced that ISU being dropped to CUSA, or even worse, the MAC, would be detrimental to ISU's academics, there are a lot of concerns out there that, in fact, ISU's academics would take a severe hit. What's a university's function - to teach kids and perform research, or to make as many $$$s as possible sporting the best football team possible, getting them on TV as much as possible, and spending millions of $$$ on facilities to facilitate this?

Not to mention this is all tax-exempt. Which means universities are free to make as much money as possible without being taxed, but donors can give money to the school's athletics and claim it on their taxes.

Not to mention each and every one of these universities are taking Federal dollars.

If one university's actions, or, in this case, many university's actions are potentially going to destroy the academics of another university because of something that has absolutely nothing to do with the classroom just so that collection of universities can make a few extra $$$ in collegiate athletics, then the plot has been lost. Since this issue involves Federal dollars in terms of research money and money that perhaps should be taxed because what was once a truly a not-for-profit has clearly become a for-profit enterprise, you damned well better believe the Government should be involved in this.

Well said.
