Momcilovic declares for NBA draft

I don't have precise numbers here and if someone knows better please correct me.

NBA 2nd round picks typically sign league minimum deals in the ballpark of a little north of 1 million.

If I had to guess Milan at minimum will be making 3x that next year playing college ball.

Why wouldn't you come back to school, earn an extra couple million, get your degree, and try to turn yourself into a 1st round pick? Heck he just saw Joshua Jefferson do it this year.

I can promise you being a preseason all american for a Big 12 school is going to be a better life than likely starting out in the G league.

We've been over this a hundred times on this board. You have 7-0 footers who play guard and an expanded 3 point line and the most offensively skilled basketball players in the world. Tell me a strategy that you think would work. Watch an NBA playoff game and tell me they aren't at least attempting to play defense.
Playoffs sure. Regular season is optional until the 4th quarter.

Can’t wait for 10 pages of posters who never watch the NBA declare that Milan’s game just isn’t a good fit.
I cannot imagine anyone here thinking/saying he is not a "good fit" for the NBA.

Milan will need to work on speeding up his release if he wants to become anywhere close to Korver.

Milan’s game is a perfect fit for what the NBA is now.

This is why I've been kind of surprised he's not mocked higher. Elite skill with his shooting, coupled with his size. The NBA game is going to allow him to float outside and hunt threes and not deal with anywhere near the physicality he deals with now. I know athleticism is an issue, but I think he can guard well enough to stick in the NBA. Hell Georges has had a long career....

No one is going to be game planning for him. His job is catch and shoot.

I think a pushback on Milan's fit in the NBA is that there are quite a few recent examples of great shooters who are relatively poor athletes and haven't made a significant impact in the playoffs, due to the increased intensity/athleticism. I'm thinking of guys like Joe Harris, Luke Kennard, Davis Bertans, and even Georges. A counterpoint to that would be someone like Duncan Robinson, who has obviously had a huge impact on a couple of Heat runs.

So the question will be whether teams view him as someone who can hold his own and elevate a team in the playoffs, or if he's more of a role player who runs the risk of getting played off the court when it matters most.

It's hard to keep track with all the court rulings. Is it possible if:
  • Drafted Yes, NBA No, G-League Yes. Or
  • Drafted No, NBA No, G-League Yes
Milan would just need to find a friendly judge. Maybe ISU's new President needs to add a Law School.

A friendly judge in Iowa with all the U of I Law grads?? I think we already know how this lawsuit would go for us.

I think for most players that leave early, unless they are a superstar, it more than likely will not work out well in the NBA. Just taking Iowa State players that left early Wigginton...made some NBA money, but now playing overseas, Horton-Tucker....got a dce n t NBA c o ntract, not sure how much was guaranteed, but now overseas. The one huge success of course is Haliburton...showing he was a borderline superstar.

Those that didn't leave but stayed for years had, in most cases better success. Niang is still in NBA I think and Monte was until this season, now overseas.

If Milan is just testing the waters, he will likely be told he needs to improve his defense and rebounding as a 6-8 wing.

I think it will be a tough choice for him. If he can improve those things...he would be a mid first rounder or b better next year, as long as the shooting is still there. Now, he is likely mid to high 2nd round at best, or a G-league guy just to get into someone's system.

For those of you getting the drizzels over this I'd suggest listening to the latest Williams and Blum podcast.
And they've never been wrong. Eyeroll.
Do I want him back for the benefit of cyclone success, of course. Do I think his stock can get any higher than right now, no.
Things that he needs to improve aren't things that he will be asked to do in the nba. He can be a high end spot up and mid range turn-around shooter. Plenty of hyper athletic players in the league, that is never going to be Milan.
There's an argument that keeps coming up about this freshman class is loaded for the draft this year. This is something that never changes. Nba will always take young talent over seniors. He will be in the same situation next year

2nd round contracts aren’t guaranteed in the NBA the way first round or normal contracts are.

If you think he’s making 3mil in NIL next year, is ISU paying him that or do you want him to transfer to get that?

Most people don’t come back and raise their draft stock, some do but it takes a very special year. What’s more likely is that further cracks in his game are exposed and his draft stock stays the same or drops. NBA loves drafting potential and it makes for some interesting choices.

His hight and shooting are obvious amazing skills but he’s a huge liability in the NBA on defense and the inability to create his own shot give him a very low ceiling. Guy is for sure going to get a shot in the NBA but is most likely a second round pick that is going to get heat check mins over a first round talent, especially this year with a very deep draft

Well, they are only "wrong" IF Milan chooses to stay in the draft. If Milan gets advice that he isn't going to be drafted in the 1st round, he logically might decide to come back to Iowa State. I agree with you that we as fans are just sort of 'hoping' that his shortcomings mean he is not 'ready', but the reality is - he will be told where he stands by the experts. There seems to be some draft folks that don't think he's gonna go high enough to make it financially worth it (relative to a year in a college).

Waiting a year does not at all impact what his career will be in the NBA, which is a sharpshooter - an elite one.
