McDermott to Creighton?

It is interesting to see when our hires have been (from a quick google news archive search, so may be off by a day):

Johnny Orr: March 25, 1980
Floyd: May 6, 1994
Eustachy: July 29, 1998
Wayne Morgan: May 14, 2003
Greg McDermott: March 21, 2006

Does it say anything about anything? Probably not.. just interesting.

I guess it tells me that in relation to ISU, there is no correlation of when we hire a new MBB coach to his future success. This could be spun as a positive if McDermott did leave.

It tells me that we were in too big of a rush to hire McDermott.

I would hope that GMac would listen, if nothing else than to hopefully improve his working conditions by going somewhere he could have an immediate impact.

However, I think it would be hard for ISU to find anybody to take over this late in the spring, especially considering the lack of movement in general this year. I would think Nurse would be seriously considered for at least a 2-year contract if things were to unfold.

But, I'm not inclined to believe that GMac is going anywhere this offseason.

Bluejays message board fans are throwing out some fun names, but one would hurt quite a bit if it materialized - Eustachy. I don't want the Cyclones to have to play against him this fall at Wells Fargo.

I'm sure Nurse/Grayer could keep us afloat for a season.

Best case scenario in my opinion is CU takes McD, and I think Larry would jump at the chance to come back to ISU even if it was May. I am sure not everyone would be happy, but I would!

I'll be the first to admit that the chances of this still are low, McD has to be willing to go (which is only a rumor at this point), but also Creighton has to want him, which we have no idea if this would be the case or not.

That said, still interesting to speculate.

Right there with you. I would personally drive him to his interview if so. (insert bad asian driver joke here)

If this did happen, how big of a kick to the nuts of JP would this be? After he stood by McD and gave him his vote of confidence after 4 awful years, McD bolts at his first chance to get out? That would be priceless.

I don't think this would be a kick to the nuts at all. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see JP waive the buyout. I believe that the only reason Pollard stood by GMac is the buyout. If he bails, IMO Pollard would be ecstatic, regardless of the bad timing. ISU wasn't going to be good next year anyway.

Very interesting from the article -

"Tension between McDermott and ISU Athletic Director Jamie Pollard grew last season, according to two Big 12 coaches with knowledge of the situation."

I heard the tension went like this:

JP-- "You have to start winning games, we have been terrible."
McD-- "Ok so fire me...oh wait, you can't, because you can't afford my 2.5 million dollar buyout."
JP-- "Damnit, you're right."

Imagine though if Larry was hired by Creighton and led his team against the McDermott coached Cyclones this fall....this thought scares me.

I wish I could really know the inner workings of our athletic department, could ****** a tv show with some of the stuff that happens.

Breaking News: Pollard extends McDermott 2 years until 2024 to keep him from leaving Iowa State for Creighton.

The interesting part of that is that according to 2 Big 12 coaches that there was tension with McDermott and Pollard. I assume one of those is Sadler and maybe Martin is the other one?

I would sure f'in hope there was tension with the results we've seen.
