Marial Shayok Commits to ISU

You don't play for Virginia unless you can play great lock down defense. In my opinion, getting a good to maybe great defender is just as important as getting a scorer. The points will come for him in a wide open offense.

Not sure what the excitement is about. Under 9 ppg and 33% from beyond the arc is underwhelming and not what final four teams are built on.

Hopefully our offense brings out something in his game but right now I am containing my excitement. Not to mention this helps zero for the uocoming season which I am most concerned about

FIRST post I've ever seen that had a clean sweep of the emoticons... WELL done sir. Well done.

Have you ever watched Virginia play? They play sloooooooow. I'm not sure how many less possessions they get a game than ISU but I'm guessing significantly less.

The kid looks incredibly athletic and he nearly averaged double figures in the ACC playing in one the slowest paced systems I've ever seen.

Last year Iowa State was 104th in the country with 73.2 possessions per game, Virginia was 350th with 62.7 possessions per game. Only team with a slower pace of play was St Mary's.

Marial has good size and athleticism to be the 3 & D Chris Babb like player for ISU which will be a nice complement to LW playmaking.
I don't think it should be underestimated how beneficial having a player drilled in Defensive principles of Virginia to practice against the ISU guards during the summer and his Red Shirt year will help get McNeill, LW and Long ready. Not to mention he'll have a year to get acclimated to Prohm's offensive system to be ready to play his senior year.

His advanced numbers aren't great for a 2 for 1 guy, but his experience will be a nice. P5 starters are good additions.

The key for him seems to be minutes played.

When the guy played 20 or more minutes last season he averaged 12 points 3 boards (only high major games). When he didn't he averaged 5 and 1. For his career he is just below a 10-4 guy shooting 51% inside the arc and 39% from beyond when playing 20+ (vs high majors).

Its not insane to think the guy could theoretically jump and be a 14-4 guy over 25+ minutes with a team that plays faster with more possessions. I am not saying he will be but I can see the point made based on how he's produced when hes got the minutes over his career.

Apparently as a fanbase we're at a point where getting someone from a very nice basketball program who averages 9 ppg and is a threat from 3 has become a bad thing.

And we're also complaining about a legit P5 player for a young but talented group of guards to practice against.

For the record, it was just that guy, and maybe one other.

95% approval rating is very high.

I'm not surprised that when a guy plays well he plays more minutes.

Look at his advanced stats. If he plays a lot he'll very likely be a 12-16 ppg guy. The only question I have is how efficiently.

Ok... his PER was 17.8 which was effectively Matt Thomas and 4th best on the roster last year.

He's going to be a great defensive addition and a nice piece for this year's guys to go against in practice all year. Welcome to FOCUSTOWN!

Fwiw, in the context of him getting better with more minutes (usage), Thomas had the 4th best PER on the 4th or 5th usage. Shayok had the 4th best team PER on the highest team usage.

With Shayok, Juiston, Babb and Morrow we could be a really good defensive and rebounding team next year.
