Kyle Kelm is.....

Mann may have a tough attitude but his basketball skills are lacking... He looks uncoordinated out there and isn't near as big as advertised, having stood next to him I would guess about 6'5" 215 which won't cut it the post... I am also not really excited about Kelm and would like to see us get a 6'8"-6'10" banger...

Agreed on Mann. He is a more athletic version of Cory Johnson but doesn't have near the basketball skills that Cory had. Plus he is shorter than advertised.

I would be more excited about Kelm if we didn't already have the exact same player in Dykstra coming in the same class. I agree that a banger would be more beneficial

Cory had more offensive skills and was/is MUCH stronger...
 
I don't know how far into the future coaches recruiting plans go, but this has been bugging me. If we knew we had some highly ranked recruits interested in us (Colvin, Gillstrap, HB, Kelm, Kadima, Shaw, and others) why would we bring in 5 guys in this years class? I am not trying to judge these 5 guys future with the team based on less than a half year of basketball, but we seem to have brought on 2 projects (Mann and Pomlee), a couple guys that will in all reality probably be role players the next few years (Buckley and Eik), and Christopherson who we cannot really assess because he had been hurt.

I can't figure out why we needed to sign 5 guys last year. We could have stored away a scholly or two for the upcoming years. The only possible reason for this I can see is that Coach Rob wasn't on board yet, and we did not realize we had a chance at some of these kids.

La-la. Let's live for the Day. I think we had slim pickings the first year, so we take who we can get and move on. Eik and Buck are playing now and contributing. McD likes to use lots of people each game unlike Wayne who said wing it.

My new best friend!

I posted this the day we signed them. We actually signed 7 this past year. Ham, JVB, Pomlee, Christopherson, Eik, Buckley, and Mann. Why we signed this many I will never know. It's not like they are guys that are going to come into a program and help out from day one. Gilstrap and Colvin appear to be those guys.

We really hurt recruiting in 2010 by signing 7 guys. We would already have a committment from Kelm if we had a spot open for him, and we can't recruit to much b/c we are still holding out on Barnes

That's fine and dandy. Take who you can get and move on, but don't take to many that you can't take very many in years to come

I agree pretty much everyone was curious as to why we chose to recruit Mann. He seems very small. Sure he is a hustle guy but so am I and I did not get recruited. Hustle guys are good if they have talent also. Not to mention some rebounding skills.
 
I think these are valid concerns...but I believe they will work themselves out...I think Pomlee will be a solid post for us. Right now, he has the athleticism and defense to make an impact for us, but is very raw offensively...I doubt he'll ever score 15 a game for us, but I believe when he improves his post moves, that he'll be a solid player for us in '10 accompanying Hamilton (who I think is gonna be a stud) down low...I also think Dykstra will be much stronger by the time he ever steps foot on campus...I'm assuming Brackins leaves after his Junior year...as far as Kelm goes, I believe we'll have a scholarship for him, and if he commits...we should have at least three solid posts with Hamilton, Pomlee, and Dykstra already...so he shouldn't have much pressure as a freshman. He clearly has the skill set to be good, but could obviously use a little bulk.

I can only guess, but:

1) A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

2) You have got to have talented bodies (12-13) to have a full practice complement. Practice is almost everything. It would be big trouble if decent competition is lacking on the practice floor (imho).

During a radio call-in show last season, GMac said that Mann's perimeter game is superior to CJ's, and he's a terrific inside battler as well.

GMac added that the chief reason he recruited Mann was because of his tough, tenacious attitude. Coach said the team is composed of great guys, but they need to develop their toughness. Mann will help in that regard, GMac said.

GMac was told some online speculators had been saying Mann was only about 190 pounds. GMac laughed, then said Mann was unquestionably 210-215 pounds. I can't see GMac (I believe him to be a man of integrity) lying about Mann's weight, but some here will probably disagree.

Geez, tough crowd here. Mann is eight months out of high school and some here seem to think his development is stalled and his potential is known fully at this moment.

Anyone here witnessed ISU basketball practices lately?

Of course GMAC is going to say that he is a better perimeter player than CJ. Mann is on the team now. But Mann is not a better perimeter player.

I had a friend who was part of the ISU team up until 4 months ago or so. Exact word on Mann, "can't shoot, can't dribble, can't pass. He is all hustle."

How much has Mann played in games this season? I'm not bagging on you, truly I don't know the answer.

Yeah, I want to talk about practice. Because without good practice work, the team won't improve its game performances. Isn't that a coaching dictum?

Have you seen enough of Mann in games so far to believe you full well know what the future at ISU holds for him? Serious question; perhaps you do.

If GMac recruited Mann for his toughness, are you sure Mann isn't adding an intangible value to ISU's practices?

Let's see, two games a week, 80 minutes of competition. Hmmm. Seven two-hour practices a week, 14 hours in which to make a contribution. Yeah, practice is important, seems to me.

Are you saying practice is not important?
