Funny how sod looks better when you actually water it enough.

There was at least a full week difference between the two hillsides having sod laid down. Both were treated the same. But rolled sod on a pallet is temperamental and the timing is critical to get it down. Beyond that, the day the NW hill was laid it was very hot. But the crew got water on it in the same exact timing as the NE hillside.

This thread never disappoints. It's almost like the folks who laid the sod down knew what they were doing...
They just didn’t know a 102 degree day was imminent.

Given the flurry of work on the plaza topsoil that started on Friday, I could almost guess that someone said, “Gee, ya think we should get the rest of the sod down before it’s back in the 90’s again?”…but this is probably just when the work was scheduled in the first place.

Sod will look good if you water it enough. If it looks a little sick, it's because of the lack of water. It's that simple.
Last year my neighbor sodded a section of his backyard (removed a trampoline) and he did not water it enough and it looked terrible.
I now have some new sod in my backyard (damage from a skid loader) and I water the $hit out of it and it looks killer.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the North Entrance. In this case they have the Jack Trice stripes and raised grass beds. I really like both. I also like the black walkway inside the concrete pathways. I'm assuming they are not doing the black walkway since they now have a concrete path running right through it.

Imagine how good those Trice stripes will look in the GameDay backdrop.

You should email JP. With this level of insight, you might have a high-paying gig waiting for you.

Truth be told.... my underground sprinkler guy told me this... and he was right. He said. "you can never water sod enough. It helps build better root system."

Just so you know…

They’ve been watering the sod plenty. Freshly laid sod, however, is vulnerable to high temps, regardless of how much water you put on it. And by “high temps”, they mean mid-nineties. It hit 102 in Ames, right after this side was laid.

They’ve been doing extra water since then. That and the milder temps (and rain) have helped it recover from the stress.

Underground sprinkler guy is just that and a salesman. Doubt he would know what it takes to build a better root system.

Replace with “would look” rather than “will look” in the reply to which you replied . The reply in the thread was to a prior version of the plaza with the Trice stripes. It does not appear that the stripes will be part of the plaza.

Is there a new vision of what the Plaza will look like? I'm sure the Trice stripes or something else could be added later if not now given that the plaza appears to include at least some grassy areas. I would think the university would want something very cool in that area to add to the curb appeal. The South entrance is nice now and the bridge is going to be very cool, but I would be disappointed if the North entrance didn't have something unique.

Yes.

Unfortunately, I can’t upload it, silly glitch. Posted somewhere in this thread, though.

From what people have posted before, it’s basically a blank canvas awaiting future decisions. What you see right now, plus grass and trees.

Probably depends on the Allbaugh family, they are footing the bill for the plaza. They might instead want to include a big sculpture of a can of Round Up herbicide.
