Jim Walden is crazy...

Re: Way to go Walden!

From the article:

you said that the University of Phoenix, which doesn't even have a football team, could beat Ohio State.

-keep.

The 41-14 score was a surprise, but it really should have been 41-7 being that on Ginn's TD return there was a blatant hold that sprung him.

The Big 10(11) is an over-rated conference, always has been, always will be. They need to grow some rocks and have a conf title game like the rest of the world so they don't have 51 day layoffs. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that is why they lost, obviously Florida was the better team, but it surely didn't help.

As for the Walden, voting Florida #1 back then with the info he had was a little crazy, but when I saw him do it, I didn't flip like the rest of the world.
At the end of the day OSU played Michigan, that was about it. And look the Wolverines did against a decent non-Big 10 team.

What I wrote to Marty yesterday at 10:54 A.M.-and then I added the final stats after the game (in red) and mailed it in today

Ohio vs Florida.

I believe that it will be a great match with Florida winning IF they utilize the following:

Run a Nickle Defense to cover the spread offense that Ohio State plays to slow it down. Well they ran the nickel and covered
Keep the turnovers in the + and not in the minus-Turnovers +2
Maintain composure and start off with a score on first possession-do not fall behind. Well Ohio State had first possession, but Florida came back and scored, Hence tying the game and never looked back.
Get the run game started early and maintained to run the clock to there benefit. (Keep there Offense of the field) 159 yards rushing- to a meager 47 for Ohio State 40:48 time of possession for Florida/ 19:12 for Ohio State

Offense:

Florida: 372 Yards

Ohio State: 82 Yards

Florida 17 Ohio State 14-(ok I was a little off on the Score)

I wish more voters would have some nads and just vote, like Walden did, for the team you think is the best, instead of for the team with the best record. In college sports, not all teams play an equal schedule like they typically do in the pros.

I don't understand how everyone can jump on the SEC bandwagon so fast after the game. If more people had been like Jim and voted Florida #1 there would have been an outrage around the nation. Everyone would have talked about conspiracy theories and such. You can't rank a team that has one loss from a power conference ahead of another team that has no losses from a power conference. I understand it showed in the game (and yes I though Florida would win) but please don't tell me that Florida should have been ranked higher going in.

Walden did not have nads when he did this. Nads would have been voting Florida #1 weeks before he actually did. Florida played 2 weeks after OSU's season ended so how do you justify voting a team #1 all season long then drop them to #3 when they didn't even play another game? Walden was rocking the boat and trying to avoid a Michigan/OSU rematch by helping Florida's cause. Granted it was only one voter and probably didn't make much difference in the numbers but the BCS is a calculated formula and points from voting polls factor into that.

Just more reasons why we need a playoff system because then maybe a Boise State would get their shot at a national title and all the arguements over who deserves what would not be as bad because it would be as simple as winning your playoff games to get to the national title game.

Did you speak to Walden about why he voted Florida #1? He explained his vote in the media. Did he tell you something different in your conversation with him?

Walden picked the right team #1, and you didn't. Walden is smarter than you when it comes to football. Deal with it...

Perhaps you are catching flack not because you disagree with Walden, but for the manner in which you are disparaging him, and your insinuation that the public reasoning he gave for his vote was a lie.

Yeah I heard his explanation and he had some valid points but it still was not smart voting on his part at the time it happened.

A blind squirrel finds finds a nut once in awhile and the sun may shine on a dog's a$$ too. So he got lucky that his poor voting paid off in the end. Any of us had a 50/50 shot at calling the winner of this game but that doesn't make us any smarter for it.

Sour grapes, brother, sour grapes...:baffled5wh:

Nice Guy? I guess you don't remember all the ISU and DMac bashing he has done after he was replaced.

If the person who replaced you at your job spent TWELVE years saying that you were bad every opportunity he could....would you not respond in kind. Especially if you had to use an abbacus, and he got a pc before he even started. I am pretty sure that you would, and if you say that you wouldn't, I would question whether or not you were telling the truth.

Well, maybe, because Ohio State beat nobody, but then we watched Michigan put 39 on the board against their "vaunted" defense, and all of a sudden you could see that Ohio State was vulnerable to speed. There was a big chink in their seemingly invinceable armor.

Michigan had their shot, did you want to see that game again??? It would have been a more fair match-up, because neither one of them belonged in the championship game, as they each showed in their bowl game.

Florida lost a heartbreaker to Auburn, but beat everyone else in the toughest conference in college football (and it is year in and year out). They may not have been dominant like OSU, but I think that had a lot to do with the quality of the opponents that they were playing.

Ironic, isn't it, almost EVERYONE on this site bashed the Big 10.

Just because Florida won the game doesn't vindicate Walden for all of a sudden voting them #1 in the last poll of the regular season after voting for undefeated OSU up to that point. Florida had a chance to prove it on the field and they did. But up to postseason, OSU earned and deserved the top ranking. Walden's sudden change of vote is still a mystery - he gave what he called valid reasons for voting Florida, but at the same time he said OSU would win the game. The man was talking out of both sides of his mouth folks.

See, I would not have a problem with his explanation if he had been voting Florida #1 anytime prior to this. But he had been voting OSU #1 all season then drops them to #3 when they hadn't even played a game. That's just plain stupid (again this referring to when this happened and not knowing what we know now.)

I'm not doubting the SEC proved they were tougher in the bowl games but back before the bowls started we did not have the luxury of knowing what is to come.

No to belabor the point, but I think there were more than a few college analysts who knew the SEC was the toughest conference well before the bowl game season! Two weeks after OSU was done, Florida beat highly ranked Arkansas on a neutral field. In most voters minds, that was enough to catapult them past Michigan; in Walden's mind it took them to #1.

Motive aside, aren't you glad that Walden did it! Most of us here are not Big Ten fans and are thrilled to see the conference exposed as "not what it was cracked up to be". Had we been forced into a OSU / Michigan rematch that stayed close, the big ten would probably have finished 1,2 & 5 in the final rankings. Having OSU and Michigan go down in a big way to lower ranked opponents is so much better!

Great points.

No because most of the things Walden says usually has the words "former Iowa State Football coach" associated with the articles which I'd rather not have him associated with us in anyway most of the time. The Walden era was not a proud time in ISU FB history and most people would rather he just fall off the face of the planet and never be heard from again. Ok maybe not that harsh but you get the point.

I do really think calling him a FB "genius" as some might refer to him is pretty generous considering what he did as a coach was nothing impressive. Nothing against Jim as a person, I'm sure he is a great guy but if you ever have listened to him and Zabel on their Two Guys Named Jim show you've probably rolled your eyes or muttered some 4 letter words at some of the dumb things those 2 guys can say.

The ESPN article had him as the former Washington State coach.
