No, whoever started this poll/discussion is not me wearing a sock.

As to rivalry, it was stated above, you hate losing to a rival like no other. For ISU that's Iowa. For K-State that's Ku. And my sense is that we loathe Ku way more than Clones hate on Hawkeyes.

To me, Farmageddon is more like Indiana/Purdue than Auburn/Alabama or Army/Air Force than Texas/aTm. We don't live with it all year if we lose. We don't hate one another. We don't see one another at the coffee shop much less scowl at the colors. There's maybe even a modicum of respect.

I’d say yes in basketball, but no in football. However:

Series history: Iowa State owns the all-time series record against Kansas State, 50-49-4.
Looks like this current losing trend has to get turned around immediately

I used to run a business in Fort Madison, IA. Everyone there was either Hawkeye or Cyclone, mostly the former. Anyway, when I talked to them about the rivalry there wasn't much bad blood. In fact, one of my Cyclone engineers scolded me for taking games so seriously, "We root for Iowa when they're not playing State." Now maybe those gals and guys are not reflective of the greater population, but my sense has always been comparatively low-level hate for their in-state bros compared to what we have in Kansas. I grew up in Sioux City. The hate there was reserved solely for Nebraska.

**** those people. They're the worst.

I chuckle at that. This guy owns thousands of acres in southwestern Iowa now. Graduated summa from ISU in nuclear engineering back in the day. Extremely smart but Iowa nice and a good friend to this day.

I don't care about any of that. Pick a damn side. People that can't pick a side ******* suck.

I find it hard to believe this could even be possible.

I grew up a Cyclone in the heart of hawkeye country. I was teased, abused and taunted. I hate the hawkeyes with the fire of ten thousand suns. I want iowa to succeed at nothing simply to shut up their loud-mouthed fans.

Yeah, you are probably right, Kansas and Purple Kansas probably hate each other more.

I cannot cheer for KU in any sport against any opponent for any reason. And yes, I have good friends that are KU grads.

My children are both ISU grads. I live in Ames and am treated well here. It is not possible for me to wish nothing but bad things on ISU like I do KU. Cripes, I'll even admit to donating to the ISU library. Imagine that, a K-State graduate donating some of his hard earned money to Iowa State!

To me, ISU is just another Big 12 opponent and not a rival.

You can be "a rival" without being "the rival".

I believe a rival is someone you hate no matter the sport. You get a general distaste in your mouth whenever you think about them. Both fan bases feel the same way. Iowa is the only school that really checks all the boxes. Nebraska is our next closest. Kansas is getting there. Missouri was close. WVU could get there easy enough, especially if they continue hiring easy to hate coaches in all sports.

K-State is like the opposite of a rival. Outside of the annoyance that we keep losing close games, I usually cheer for them when they aren't playing us.

They do seem to have a very angry fanbase on twitter (no idea why), but most interactions I've had with them in person has been positive.

There are degrees of rivals. For ISU, Iowa is as much of a rival as a team can have, like Kansas-Mizzou and Wisconsin-Minnesota. Then you can have rivals that are still rivals but aren't quite the same - Iowa State vs. K-State, or Kansas vs. K-State, or Wisconsin vs. Iowa.

I just drove through Kansas today to get to Denver. I'd rather I never go back to that wasteland again. I think I hated the drive worse than Nebraska, which is really hard to believe.

I dread the KC to Topeka drive let alone to Manhattan. Wasteland is correct. I honestly can stand Nebraska better than NE Colorado when you break off around ogalala. Not even gas stations.

I drive back to Iowa for Christmas and I like driving through Nebraska. It’s better than Kansas. You’re near the river for parts of it in Nebraska which is nice.

Anyone that disagrees with KSU being a rival is wrong. It sucks losing any conference game. But losing to KSU brings out a special kind of hatred in me. Doubly so when the game is in Manhattan. I think there was even an editorial on this site detailing the losses that ISU has had at the hand of K-State over the past decade or two, and it did not take long before they got to the truly triggering recaps.

Yeah, stopping for gas in NE Colorado has been much more harder for me than it ever should be. You usually end up driving a mile away from I-76 through some small town down, multiple people at the gas station give you weird looks, and then you get delayed by a train.
