Bosco doesn't have the space to get much bigger. Either does Columbus.

The one that's going to get big in the Cedar Valley is Waterloo Christian. They just bought the old Cedar Falls High School and are going to renovate it in phases as they grow. I'll bet they're a 3A school in a decade.
Yeah that might end up taking off. I could see lots of parents that are unhappy about the East/West merger coming sending their kids to Waterloo Christian.

Roland-Story to Oelwein (2A District 4) is a 2 hour drive one way.
Boone has three trips greater than 2.5 hours (Glenwood, CB Jefferson, & Lewis Central)
South Tama just moved down to 2A for football, their closest game is 70 miles away (PCM - 1hr 13 min). Also play, Pella Christian - 1 hr 13 min drive, Albia - 1 hr 39 min, Davis County - 2 hr, Centerville 2 hr 6 min.

The Cedar Falls school district didn’t destroy the school building? They must have needed it for something? Around here old school buildings get destroyed, dont want anyone starting another school.

It is so old I am surprised any educational institute would want to renovate it! Going to take a lot of money to turn it into a destination of chioce. Large piece of land...hardly any parking...will be interesting to watch that development.

Cedar Rapids moved out of a 100+ yo elementary school building claiming the maintenance costs were too high and then a non-profit moved into it. I haven't figured out who is the dumber party yet on that one.

Its about time for the state to look at the system used in Missouri, where they only have 4 teams per district, based on geography, and then open it up to the 4/5 other games that you can play whoever you want and not have it count against you. Win your district you go to the playoff. Only problem with this idea is that there are going to be some districts with two or three strong teams, while others have none, but they could do their best to try and even it out.

Marion moved out of an aging elementary and either sold or transitioned it to the Marion Home School Assistance Program. Make it make sense that a home school program has a school building...

North Tama did end up dropping down to 8 Man, their AD mentioned they had been discussing it for a couple of years. Creates a nice little district there with GMG and GR close by.

3A District 2 has a fair amount of driving

That seems like something the local library is perfected suited to handle.

Probably not big enough (it is a decent size home school program) and well you can't do your entirely own thing complete with building a new playground at the public library.

I think CF paid for the asbestos removal which made that building a lot more appealing. Also Waterloo Christian was running K-12 out of the basement of a Baptist Church. This gets them a gym for basketball and a field to play football on. As a rule I'm not a fan of private schools but if you had a school like that needing to move to a bigger space sliding into another building already built for that makes a lot of sense.

Solon is getting to see a lot of Avenue of the Saints, as it travels down to those schools. Most are within 30 minutes or so of Mount Pleasant.

Having the district winner be the only playoff team left a lot of really good teams out of the playoffs over the years. There isn't really a way to even it out. Some schools are just out of luck on distances.

So what is the answer, you either have schools driving two hours to a game to even up the district or screw over a few teams that are in a tough district. With only four teams, the state could avoid putting traditionally good teams in the same district much like they do in 5A. No system is going to perfect for everyone, but when schools are traveling 2 to 21/2 hours to games is not working either.
Look at Davis Co., it would be very easy for them to play Albia, Centerville, and Charton and then let them pick up Cardinal, Central Lee, VB and Eddyville to make out their schedule. All schools close to the same size and all within an hour drive at most.

The answer is some teams are going to have some long road trips. Or, maybe do 4 or 5 team districts and the top two get in with some at large. Leaving good teams out of the playoffs should be the last thing they do.

Well the CRCSD just paid $150,000 an acre for PRIME retail development land to put a school on off Edgewood Road, so...

The state makes it work in 5A, splitting up the best teams, they can do the same in the other classes. I can remember when Palmer and Pomeroy where the two best teams in class A basketball for a few years, the two school were less than 10 miles apart. What did the state do, put the into different districts so they would not meet until the finals, which they did that year. You could easily do the same in football, without having to travel 2 hours to play a game. So Pella Christian plays Osky in a non district game, it does not hurt Pella to play that game and it's 15 miles away. Hell it might help them in the long run as they would be playing teams their size once they hit district play.

They need to remove an 11-man classification with so many schools now in 8-man. That would address a significant amount of the travel issues.

Another solution would be forced school consolidations and/or program sharing to reduce the number of 8-man and A programs facing participation issues.

I promise you there was a giant party in the football offices in South Tama last night. Drive times be damned.
