INSIDER: What happened with Lazard/the draft?

I hope you realize how tin-foil-hat like this sounds. Dudes from Wyoming and UTSA went in the first round. There were picks from Louisiana Layfette, Rutgers, Central Arkansas, Yale and Wagner picked. There was a dude who doesn't even play football drafted. This isn't some kind of low exposure deal. It's not a conspiracy against Iowa State deal. It's just an odd thing that happened, I'm sure due to a multitude of circumstances lining up just right.

It’s silly to make yourself a victim out of this. No one isn’t going to try and not draft the best fit for them just to screw Iowa State. I think I saw some guy drafted from Southeast Missouri State and I didn’t even know there was such a school. That player didn’t seem to suffer from not going to a known football school.

Michael Parrett was the agent out of element sports group.

From what I can see they had 4-5 guys drafted. Highest being #37

The one quote that stuck out to me from Tommy's article is the agent calling him to tell him to look at teams that may be a good fit. Isn't that the agent's job? Sure seems like something the agent should know and be advising him on. You'd think you'd get "hey, I think we should consider a place like Jacksonville. I know they are looking for WRs and they are a competitive team. Maybe I can get you something guaranteed." Sounds like he got "hey, hows the wifi and B-Dubs? Google NFL teams with bad receiviers. We will talk later."

St. Brown’s production decreased drastically when Kizer left and Wimbush became the guy. That probably was why he dropped to sixth round and would not have helped Lazard any either.

Yeah you're probably right. Maybe I'm just being Debbie Downer today because I'm ticked off that a guy like Lazard who deserves everything good that could happen to him got screwed over.

I definitely don't want it to be a case that Iowa State just can't get guys drafted.

Hopefully it's a case that Lazard's agent completely failed him and that he will get his shot and succeed despite the obvious setback.

Mackenro Alexander was invited to Vikings' Mini-Camp.

I thought he had some Redskins deal?

And what’s up with @JStanz51 ”running” blog? Was he jogging when he posted and will never update?

Maybe, I saw it on some Vikings website. I think those mini camp invites can be really fluid.

Allen Lazard will be fine. Jacksonville drafting one WR and Lazard being the only WR signed as a UDFA is huge.

Adam Thielen has done great as a UDFA for the Vikings. It happens.

Bummer for him...I can take comfort in knowing that even if Lazard doesn't even make a roster he's going to come out far and away much better off than some of the jackbags that get drafted high.

Even if it looks good for ISU to have someone go high, I'd struggle to support something like this:

Of the possible explanations I've heard so far, I think the most probable is that teams were hung up on whether to use him as a receiver or tight end. That's where the agent was needed - to convince teams they could use him BOTH ways and that was a big advantage over other receivers.

Yep. Plus it seems like the agent didn't have an answer for teams who weren't sure if he should be a WR or a TE. Like, dude, what do you think your job is?

I wonder if teams thought that Lazard has peaked and doesn't have anymore upside. There surely were teams that must have been picking guys with potential upside because they didn't have the stats of Lazard.

LOL. After the 1st three rounds? Maybe the 7th round at best. Check out the signing bonuses and total contract values for players picked in the 4th round.

I continue to believe that if you aren't going to get drafted in the first three rounds, you are almost better off being UFA because you control the process. I know hearing your name called is what everybody wants, but signing money at the bottom of the draft is miniscule, and picks are often just flyers taken by teams because a scout is adamant about a player, or they will find guys with a local angle or interesting background to stock the practice squad. If you want to see the field, pick the team that needs what you have to offer and go win a roster spot.

I have zero concern that AL will fail to make an NFL team, and play on Sunday. He's a pro, they just don't know it yet.
