In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

I bet desalvos has been gone for 20 some years now? They were in the CJ, I think where Pammel is now.

Yeah, DiSalvo's had the end spot in Colorado Junction. Opened late spring or early summer of '04, but only lasted a couple of years.

Good food, tough location. I went there a bunch and rarely saw more than 1 or 2 tables occupied.

The early version of West Cyde Wings was good. I wouldn't mind Oddfellows returning, or even better, Ruttles.
I was a regular at Pazessco and followed the owner to Oddfellows.

Both places were good but in tough spots. Really solid food at them.

The one on Hayward behind the bank was peak.

All these years later and I would know that smell and taste immediately.

I was taken to the "old" Battles when I first visited Ames around 2002. It could have been taken right out of downtown Chicago. Loved it.

In the early 1980's while in college in Chicago, on the way to a Bulls game, I would get off the Madison Avenue bus a few blocks short of the Chicago Stadium (pre- United Center), in order to get a BBQ dinner. Then, we would sit near the court before the game and eat our food before they kicked us back to our standing room only seats. $6 tickets late in the season against Cleveland with a 50% student discount. The other 50% more than covered the BBQ dinner.

Battles and DaVinci’s. I’m dating myself and my nostalgia stomach might be remembering good times over good foods
Oooh, DaVinci's.

Used to go there my freshman year with a bunch of people from the Sousa section. I forget what exactly was on the pizzas we always ordered, but once you started eating it there was a timer on when you needed to be near a bathroom. Tasted great eating it, mildly uncomfortable a bit later.

Anyone remember a bar back in the day (90s, I think)... called the Far Side? Where was it located?

Free Keg Friday at West Cyde was the best. Start there, hop on the bus back to Welch and continue the FAC
I talk about this often. This wouldve been a great loss leader for a young professionals crowd. I don’t know if it worked for us broke college students. I had a friend who worked there and would bring home like 4 lbs of wings crammed in a to go container. Good times.

Worked here for 3 years. The amount of free food and beer that was available after the original owner is mind boggling and no shock they couldn’t keep that place in business.
