The great debate…
This thought came about after reading the Caleb Grill Fareway deal.

I go to Fareway because it’s close but I don’t pretend to not know the Hyvee is winning this game 35-7. Here are just a few reason off the top of my head

1. Seafood. Fareway’s seafood counter is virtually non existent.
2. Open on Sundays and major holidays. I personally don’t care about your religious values just let me buy my Sunday breakfast on Sunday.
3. Online ordering. I’ve done this at Hyvee a few times and it’s awesome. Just don’t give me the worst avocados you can find.

I’ve got more but I’ll let people chime in first.

Oh boy, this should be a good thread lol

I think for most people, it is simply about location and convenience. I know I don't have time to do a ton of price comparison.
I go to Hyvee because it is close to my home/work. It's a nice store, the employees are helpful and the checkout lines are typically reasonable.

I primarily go to fareway but will go to hyvee when they have good deals or they have something fareway doesn't.

Unless things have changed some fareways do have online ordering.

HyVee is close so I go there for most everything except if I have time to burn and plan on grilling/smoking something I'll opt for Fareway's meat counter.

I will say those HyVee TV commercials about 5 million donated meals are literally among the worst TV commercials I've ever seen. So Fareway gets points there.

Interesting. I will look into it. The Ames HyVee built a pickup building which indicates to me they are really trying to get out ahead of this. I have never noticed a pickup spot in or outside of my local Fareway.

Shop Fareway mostly. HyVee sometimes for sale items or things Fareway does not carry. When we will be near an Aldi we pick up stuff sometimes. Aldi is pretty awesome.

3 Hy-Vees are closer than the closest Fareway. Hy-Vee selection is better, prices are a mixed bag considering sale prices, more non-grocery items at Hy-Vee when trying to cut down on trips or limit covid exposure. Otherwise, 2 great Iowa-based chains.

Hy-vee is extremely overpriced and Fareway is too far away from my residence. I buy most of my groceries and Costco and get my meat and eggs from local farmers.

as mentioned selection is another big reason. I needed pancetta last week for a stuffed pork chop I was concocting. I asked 2 employees and they didn’t have it. I know this isn’t like an everyday ingredient but it’s not that uncommon either. Not like I was asking for mortadella.

HyVee has gone downhill by getting away from their core business into strange areas (Market Grille, bath bombs and clothes), but you can find pretty much anything you want and I guess some people like the pickup thing (I’d never want a HS student picking my produce FWIW). From when I worked there as a kid, the customer service has declined a lot as well. Most of the stores are extremely high-traffic which doesn’t make it a pleasant experience in the parking lot or in the store.

Fareway is good for staples and obviously meat/deli. The no Sunday thing is frustrating but that’s their choice.

We go to HyVee for most things because it’s closer but I’d probably go to Fareway first if it was. It’s 6 of one and half-dozen of the other IMO.

I haven't lived consistently in Iowa since 2006. At that time Hy-Vee has the massive advantage in stock and hours. They had everything and were open all the time. They also had a dining service and Chinese food buffet, while Fareway was just groceries.

Fareway was still cheaper for comparable items. and the beef quality at Fareway was far and away better than Hy Vee.
