For ten years of my life I maintained, updated, and replaced grocery store refrigeration systems. If you knew the cleanliness standards that were followed for both grocers, you would never buy your refrigerated groceries at Hy Vee again. Out of all grocery chains, HV is THE most disgusting. Most cold cases look like a rhinoceros vomited it’s last full weeks of meals in them, absolutely disgusting. Fareway cleans there meat cases weekly….. HV never does. Don’t even ask me about HV produce cases. Enjoy fellas.

edit: yes, there are condensate compartment under the merchandise that you see, and the refrigerated air recirculates through that compartment and is directed back over your food. That’s where the disgusting rotten goo is from all the blood or rotted produce that slimed down.

Oh boy, this should be a good thread lol

I think for most people, it is simply about location and convenience. I know I don't have time to do a ton of price comparison.
I go to Hyvee because it is close to my home/work. It's a nice store, the employees are helpful and the checkout lines are typically reasonable.
The bbq pork from fareway is a million times better. If the OP wants breakfast Sunday morning…he can get it anywhere. IMO the meat difference at fareway with quality is a lot better!

Worked at Fareway in high school and college. Produce cases and milk cases were cleaned every so often. Meat cases are cleaned every Saturday night. Tore down to the bare bones and everything is cleaned and sanitized.

Hy Vee. When we (finally) started getting Hy Vee's up here in the Twin Cities I was thrilled. Super Valu sucks. Cub is the worst. I also love AE products which only Hy Vee sells up here.

I am ecstatic to learn that Bloomington (five min away) is going to be putting up the state's biggest Hy Vee location.

If Fareway ever started opening up here I would go to both probably. But there are already so many chains I don't think they'd make it.

Not exactly sure.
Hyvee ticked me off when they closed the bakery in bills family foods in forest city. Their rolls were unbelievable. Now they are those frozen, thawed out, crappy things.

Yup. Worked for Fareway in high school. Those 11 hour Saturdays with the cleaning at the end of the day were not what you call fun.
