20 years ago, HyVee was preferred. Today, Fareway by a lot. The newer Fareway stores are a big step up from the old stores. Our HyVee seems more like a Dollar General in some of the new aisles.

I've been going to HyVees off and on for 50 years. My impression is they've gone more corporate recently. Those commercials are unbearable. I have to pause them and zap through or mute them. Fareway is a grocery store and that's where I prefer to buy groceries.

I kinda doubt this is the case now, what with hyvee announcing expansion into Kroger territory
I noted that too which kind of makes me think the statement may be valid. Indicating a structured process.

Fareway, but its always strange having some high schooler walk you out to your car.
Agreed but it's really a plus for Grandma, which nobody thinks or cares about. Which seems risky from a bottom line perspective because your big spending demo is certainly NOT coupon cutting widows on a fixed budget. But bigger picture I think for the overall brand fareway tries to be different in those big ways.

Sure, some of it is aw shucks folksy and religiously inspired, but being different is valuable in of itself because you stand out, even if it is inconveniently and awkwardly different. Like the Sundays thing or the courtesy to your car thing.

And it gets the check outs moving quicker, they don't have cart corrals in the lot, etc.

Fareway will take a packaged ham you grabbed from the case and cut it in dinner slices for free. Even when our Hy-Vee still had a serviceable meat counter, they would not do this.

Hy-Vee has less food selection than Fareway because of all the other crap they put in the store. At the Hy-Vee near one of my sons, they have a big KC Chiefs store, a bar and grill, and a medical clinic, but no Multi-Grain Cheerios.

When I worked in the deli at the Waukee Hy-Vee from 2014-2015, we would slice any packaged meat or cheese on demand. Only time we had to say no was once when a guy wanted a bone-in ham sliced up, which we couldn't do because the bone would have wrecked our slicers.

The lack of cart corrals helps with parking. I swear in each parking aisle at HyVee it goes handicap, handicap, handicap, cart corral, veteran parking, generic space, cart corral, then a bunch of generic spaces. You can go at 9:30 at night thinking you’ll get a close spot but nope there are no close spots.

A friend who worked in the deli at the same HyVee I did once had a customer ask if the roast beef was gluten free. Gotta love customers.

Yeah I don't mind the Purple Heart or Preggos but sometimes I see the charging station spots like front and center too. I would think having those on the edge would make more sense.

The West Ames store used to have an optician years ago.
DSW going into HyVee seems to be the new thing.

Basically the argument centered around she didn't specify and he wasn't willing to print two more labels.
Yeah, that's weird. If I order two steaks wrapped separately they just label each one without even asking. At least that's been my experience. I don't blame you for being frustrated at the experience though.

Even with the other stuff, most hyvees have far more options than fareway. Fareway also tends to have less of each item, so its more common to see stuff just missing.

Our store used to do it, but charged a quarter a pound. Then they changed to refusing to do it. Now they have no person at a meat counter and everything is packaged elsewhere.

They also package prescriptions elsewhere. They don’t group them all together. Last time I went in there, they wanted me to yell out my husband’s Social Security number to them in the back of pharmacy to see if they had the right pills.

Also expectant mothers, like being pregnant means you can’t walk from the parking lot, but can roam by the soap bombs and bar and grill trying to find the olive oil they put by the spaghetti sauce instead of with all of the other oil

Hy-Vee may have more selection and quantities but lots of times the items they have in stock are already expired, or about to.

Hy-Vee prices literally all of their counter meats in $X.00 for 2 or 4 etc, and then cut them into 5oz pcs which makes figuring out how much per pound they’re actually charging you impossible to figure out.

Hy-Vee puts fake sale price tags on items that make it look like a good deal, but they its really not even on sale or a good deal.

I will say they have better hours, better alcohol selection, better seafood. But i try to avoid it when possible.

Shopping for someone else that is gluten intolerant, you'd be surprised at what has gluten these days. Even the seasoning or marinade in meats can cause issues for some people. I was making chili for a group and had a fun time even with the chili packets finding a gluten free one.

I do my grocery shopping on Sunday almost every week so Hy-Vee is the easy answer.
I used to think Fareway had better meats but now they’re indistinguishable to me.
