Getting progressively more drunk.
Getting progressively more depressed.
Just about time to go dust off the ol' guitar and play a little something. Maybe Wonderwall.

Dear JP,

If you land Hornacek, I will renew football tickets for the 2016 season no matter how many wins we have this year.

Pure speculation. But I don't see Hornacek really get interested in Cyclone job unless Suns refuse to give him an extra guranteed year. If it's between a lame duck year with the Suns and some better job security and slightly better pay at Iowa State, it COULD happen.

But if you don't like the stepping stone to NBA position, then be careful with what you wish for with Hornacek. A couple years of success at Iowa State added to his perceived success with improving the Suns, and he will be a hot name for NBA job just like Hoiberg is now.

Of course, in a couple years TJ maybe better suited for the job, or perhaps Hoiberg has the NBA out of his system and is ready to end his career at his true dream job.

I think I'd be ok with it in this situation. If ISU sends 2 coaches to the NBA, I think it would start to become a more attractive job for up and coming coaches or even established coaches. The more years ISU is relevant the more we establish a brand as a basketball school. This stuff takes time, but we need the coach in place that can attract talent. If Pollard screws this up, everyone chalks this up as "ISU sucks since we don't have Hoiberg" We need to see years of continued success post-Hoiberg.

Iowa State: Cradle of Basketball Coaches

Need to have sustained success to have a good coach that actually wants to stay here. The other option is to hire a coach that is below average that nobody else wants. (Think Fran)

I have no problem with ISU basketball being a feeder system for the NBA. It would mean we're getting talented coaches that are promoted to the highest level.

JP has to see the excitement the Hoiberg Era has brought. I expect JP to bring in a talented leader even if we get a true gun for hire

Interesting article on Hornacek. IF Hoiberg leaves, we'd all be pretty satisfied if Hornacek stepped in. I think he'd be pretty successful. More success = better chances of sustaining that success, even if Hornacek ended up moving on in the future.

I think this is the right take. It's okay to be the "stepping stone" as it infers success, and much like a program that has a reputation of getting recruits to the NBA, coaches will take notice that you can have success at ISU and further your career in the process.

Hoiberg's situation frankly helps in this regard. Coaches like Hornacek see that you can go the college route, get paid well, have a certain level of control you don't get in the NBA, and still advance your career.

I really don't think Hornacek ends up in Ames, but there would be no chance, if it weren't for Hoiberg demonstrating that you can turn the job into a better job if you have success.

Well, preliminary work may have started before 6/14.

That's why I always thought it would be Otz. He and pollard are good friends.

As someone somewhat familiar with each, Hoiberg through his father and Hornacek as a contemporary, I agree that you have to treat Jeff at least as well financially as ISU is prepared to treat Fred, if Hoiberg is otherwise moving on.

At the beginning of the Johnny Orr era, before attending games, I had read some about it in the Daily and then, how exciting to listen to games on the radio, and a scrappy freshman walk on coming in and helping bring home the win -- when Ws were few and far between that for a long, long time before that.

I'm coning around to the idea of Otz taking over. He's a hell of a recruiter. He's proven to be a hell of a recruiter to Ames. He knows the kids, the area and the system that Fred runs. Beyond the dream scenarios of Fred staying, or of Hornacek coming on board with Otz as an assistant, I think TJ is tied for 2nd on my board with someone like Rice from Boise State.

Just because he's a good recruiter doesn't mean he can be a good head coach.

Fred's silence is confirmation.

The surgery recovery helped him....he's not been "working" and has had an easy out. No surgery, he would have been on the tailgate tour, etc. publically all have said he is set to return to work MOnday....right... ;-)

Very true. And just because you are a good head coach (see McDermott), it doesn't mean you can succeed at Iowa State. There is going to be an element of risk in any choice. My number 1 choice by far is Hornacek, who is as close to a no brainer as you can get. I'd personally pay $100 more for my corner tickets to see this ride continue, and Hornacek is a guy who could undoubtedly make it happen. But, if Jeff doesn't want to coach here, and Jamie isn't looking to spend $2-3 million for a splash hire, then we are left with mid-major coaches which bring their own sort of risk (see McDermott).

Still not buying it. What was his record last year without his son?
