Friday Off Topic Celeb Passing

Comedians - Robin Williams

Actors - Heath Ledger and Michael Clark Duncan

Pro athletes - Kirby (childhood favorite) and Junior Seau (sister in San Diego was a good friend of his)

Once younger me figured out that famous people OD too often, the shock of celebs dying kinda went away. That's why it's hard for me to list people like Chris Farley, John Belushi, Mitch Hedberg, or any rock star.

To attack the other angle of this line of thinking:

Robert Downey Jr and Johnny Depp are two guys that have survived that have somewhat surprised me. They both seemed to be heading down the River Phoenix path early on.

Also, I'm convinced that Charlie Sheen will live forever.

Pete Taylor, only famous person that really shocked me when he died. Grew up listening to Pete and still miss him. JW does a great job but Pete will always be my favorite. I guess he wasn't a celebrity as in super famous but his passing is the only one of a person that I didn't know that I was really depressed about.

And Duh, Johnny Orr. We all knew he was getting up there and not in the best shape, but it still was hard to swallow.

Here's a few.

Robin Williams - Sad because he overcame so many demons when he was younger.

Ronald Reagan - His patriotism and confident, yet self-effacing and easy-going demeanor really helped get this country out of a funk that was partially brought on by a terribly corrupt president and two well-meaning but pretty much incompetent presidents (I hope this doesn't get sent to the cave. I'm really not political and it was almost 3 decades ago that he ended his term).

Paul Newman - Most of his best movies were made before my time but he was such a cool guy on so many different levels. What handsome, leading men in Hollywood stay married for fifty years?

Immediately thought of Coach Johnny Orr. Came to ISU when I was a student and made basketball fun immediately.

Paul Newman was a gift to all of us. His "Newman's Own" foods brand funded a LOT of charities.

This is going to sound either super emo or sociopathic or both, but deaths don't really affect me a all. Even if it's family or friends I'm usually kind of "meh" about it.

The death of Elliott Smith really got to me, because I was just getting into his music at the time of his death, and he was a person I really felt some empathy for.

Vonnegut and Bowie were big ones for me, as was Salinger. Phillip Seymour Hoffman also was.

I will legit be upset when Bill Murray passes.

Celebrity deaths generally don't bother me that much. I feel shocked when I first read it, but don't really think about it much further.
