Football schedule question

Nebraska's schedule against OK & TX is the same as most of the north teams - every year they play one of the two. ISU and KU are the two exceptions that play both traditional power schools on a two year on followed by a two year off cycle. The difference is that when KU plays them, it's one at home and one on the road. ISU's schedule is either both at home or both on the road.

And, I believe it's usually in consecutive weeks. A quick look at the schedule shows that since 2002, only 2003 and 2006 were not consecutive--'03 went OU, @ TTU, UT; '06 went @ UT, UNI, Nebby, @OU. 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2015 (as far as our known conference schedule goes out), all feature back-to-back weeks against UT and OU. Not going to take the time now to see if other schools have this...but it makes for a rough stretch.

That, and no way in hell the Big 12 ever schedules the southernmost team to travel to the northernmost team at the end of November. All them good ol' Texas boosters wouldn't put up with that nonsense.

I don't think the South teams have ever played ISU in the winter. I wish we could get a real cold weather game against Texas some year and have them shatter in the bitter cold on the frozen tundra of Jack Trice stadium. It seems weak to me that they all but outright refuse to come north in the winter.

It's not a weather issue. The last 2 or 3 conference games are almost always scheduled between teams in the same division. There are occasionally exceptions usually involving Nebraska to secure a national TV game, but we need to improve the program in order to earn an opportunity for a game like that. I have no problem with the current situation since it improves the odds that division titles are settled head to head down the stretch.

I believe ISU didn't want a bye week so we can avoid playing Thanksgiving weekend when it's cold and attendance isn't very good.

attendance may be better if they were 10-1 going into the game instead of 3-8

We SHOULD be playing Iowa on Thanksgiving weekend.

I absolutely agree with this. We did this in 2001 to reschedule due to 9/11 and the game was an awesome atmosphere with both teams at 6-4 and vying for better bowl position.

Okie State will play in Ames in November this year, though that is the only time I can recall us playing a south team at home in November.

I think the Big 12 just wants south teams playing south teams in late November because of divisional championship implications. Same for the north.

Also, I believe that I have read on here before that the Big 10/11 has a rule that prevents a late season game between us and Iowa.

I never thought of that but I would really go for this!!! Like 2001 except for all the right reasons.

I really love this idea. I think this would be a great time for the rivalry game!

Agreed. This would be the only reason I would be in favor of playing that weekend and having a bye during the season.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the North-South rotation has changed since the inception of the Big 12. Are the rotations in the Big 10 and SEC done the same way?

The SEC does not do their rotation the same way that we do. Each team has a "rival" from the opposing division (for instance, LSU-Florida) and the other two teams rotate on and off the schedule. I would love to go to something like this, as it could restart the OU-NU and OSU-ISU annual rivalries (although we'd somehow get stick going against Baylor annualy)

In the Big 10 each team has 2 rivals, for instance Iowa always plays Minnesota and Illinois. And then the other 6 conference games are played, from an outsiders perspective, totally at random.

In the SEC there's one rival from the opposite division a team always plays. I kind of like this idea. I'd love to see us play Okie State every year (or maybe OU...so we can keep trying each year to get that magical 6th win against them...oif)

Yeah, that 01 game was great! It was also a great tailgate too! Plus a ton was on the line for that game if my memory is right. Didn't we need a win to go bowling? Yep, and we beat em.

I have been saying that this game NEEDS to be played at the end of the year since that game. It was well played....and could have big implications at the end of a season for both teams.....thus, bigger media attention, becomes a more important game...etc.

Right now, every time we play Iowa....we play at sucky 11:00....because there are always HUGE games going on that weekend....and little pay attention to ISU-Iowa...

I'd venture to guess that ISU-Iowa could open or close the entire football season, have it's own weekend, and most people outside the state would pay little attention to it.

I like moving the game (as I previously noted a number of times) to the end of the season, but in most years I'd bet the exposure would not be much better.

Some may argue we have two out of four easy years so we can go to the Detroit or Similar Bowl. Unfortunately, we watsed our chances so far. This is Gene's fault moving us to KC Arrowhead for money. He left town early and that money will be used to pay his ex-assistants...
