Fixing NFL OT

Maybe it’s because I’m also a soccer fan, but I don’t really get the hate for ties. As 3truefans said, sometimes it’s fun to watch both teams lose, and there are plenty of times when a tie can feel like a win for one team and a loss for the other

I'm also a soccer an but I HATE how teams will play for a draw too. IMO when you have teams settling for a tie it's bad for the sport.

It’s somewhat relative to a team’s station.

Prior to Campbell we’d have danced in the streets if we tied Oklahoma.

To me it depends on the team. Real Madrid doing it? Yeah, probably in the same boat. A minnow doing it against a giant? I think it can be entertaining.

Part of it is that you’re more likely to make comment/call in if you’re upset about something. And it happens rarely enough that it doesn’t come up all that much

Also, it sometimes feels like the anti-tie argument can fall into “ties are unmanly and un-American” arguments which why subject yourself to that?
Ties are like going to a mystery movie and you leave with it unsolved. It’s a let down and you feel rather meh about the experience.

2 pt conversions is not perfection. High school has it best. Start at the 10. 4 plays to score a TD. no FGs
I think this sounds the best to me. Takes the stupid kicker out of it too for the most part. 4 plays from the 10 yd line to score a TD…. plain and simple. And should be relatively quick too I would think?

There's on average fewer than 1 tie per season and hasn't been one the last two seasons. There's no need to change anything to affect 0.3% of the regular season outcomes.

I really don't understand the people that are ok with a tie. What's the point of having a competition if there isn't a winner?

When a team sits on the ball and essentially plays for a tie like GB did last night it really does take away from what was a pretty fun game up to that point. Go back to sudden death right away or something like if the first team scores a field goal the next possession a field goal can't tie the game. The second possession team either has to score a TD or lose. That would at least stop teams from sitting on the ball and running out the clock.

Maybe if OT ends in a tie have a kick off. Start at the 50 and move it back five yards if both kickers hit.

Best way to avoid a tie... threaten to institute a Hunger Games style of overtime. May the odds ever be in your favor.

Because you’re there to watch the competition/watch your team compete.

And there can definitely be ties that feel like a win or a loss. Hell, Iowa State has had wins that felt like losses

There's too much kicking.

We've reached the absurdity of people making 70 yard field goals.

You get two punts and one field goal attempt per half, use them wisely.

On the same topic of OT rules, I think there is an argument to be made that taking the ball first could actually be the right play. I get both sides of wanting to know what you need to do when you get the ball, but I feel like there is more value in potentially getting the ball a second time if you receive first. Especially in a game where no one was stopping the other like last night, I thought the Packers should've received first.

I also thought they mismanaged the hell out of the clock due to the fear of the Cowboys getting the ball again if they had to settle for a FG

This is such a weird take.
