A tie is a resolution. Like a halved match in the Ryder Cup is a resolution.
I've never understood this take. How is it a different sport than the rest of the game? Team A gets the ball at the 25 and... go. There are still first downs, the same penalties, the same play clock, the same points awarded for FGs, the same points for TDs and extra points. If giving both teams the ball at the 25 with an equal shot at driving and scoring points to win the game makes it a different sport, I just don't get that side of it.
It's definitely weirder to end a professional sporting event in a tie.
I should say different game, not sport. But your taking out major factors in the game in order to get it over with faster, I think it’s super exciting but it’s like yeah you were as good as this team for X minutes, but they’re better than you at two point conversions so they win.
I disagree. College overtime was perfected but that is in the past. The 2 point conversion tradeoff is really dumb.
If you cant allow a tie, then why time the games? If you can't end in a tie, then it doesn't make sense to "run out of time" because you just add time until some other thing happens. Do like volleyball and play to a point value - first team to 24 points wins. You could still have a play clock and scheduled breaks, but no "halftime" or "quarters" because you don't know when the game ends.
In the NHL, ties haven't been possible for like 20 years. The last time they changed OT was to make the sudden death period before shootouts be 3 on 3.

I think the NHL changed their overtime and no longer ends in a tie.
What it both teams really are equal? Would you be satisfied with a coin flip to decide it? Because at a certain point thats all it really is - random variation. Its our fault for creating some narrative of "team quality" based on a bunch of outcomes that are HEAVILY influenced by randomness.
The point of competition is to see who is better, right?
If two teams are equally good, isn't a tie the best indication of their relative quality? If you force one team to win, then you're putting a ton of weight on things that aren't indicative of relative quality. So you might as well have a coin flip. Or weiner dog races. Or have opposing fans arm wrestle. Is that satisfying?
NFL OT can be sudden death if we knock off the coin flip nonsense and they decide who gets possession by doing whatever you call the "players both start on the their backs with the ball between them, race to get the ball and get out the opponents end of the 10yd box first" drill
And 3 on 3 in the NHL is actually quite fun to watch. Not suggesting the NFL to go 7 on 7, but the point is you can find ways to make OT more exciting for fans while declaring a winner to the game without having the OT drag on.
But depending on the OT rules, OT games in playoffs may need to be more closely resembled to regular time. Again, the NHL plays 5 on 5 in OT for playoff games until someone scores. It works for them. I think the NFL can come up with ways to make OT more enticing for fans in the regular season while using a more traditional method for playoff OTs
