Dry January

Today’s a litmus test. I’m traveling for work but have had super delays at the airport. I’ve lucked into upgrades on my flights into sections with free drinks. When I get to where I’m supposed to be I’ll only make the hosted reception part of today’s meetings….

Edit - I plan on being rewarded by waking up tomorrow being 10lbs lighter and being able to run a 7 minute mile again.

Haven’t had a drink since NYE. Still feel like **** in the mornings, so I decided to try and cut caffeine too. Just made it through day two. I was drinking either two small cans or one big can on Celsius every single day at minimum. We’ll see how it goes. I had a pretty bad headache yesterday afternoon.

That sucks. I had a 3 or 4 day stretch where I was getting a minor headache late in the afternoon right before NYE. I couldn't explain them, glad they have stopped.

My first couple of mornings after NYE my morning coffee also made me feel worse instead of better. I skipped it for a few days, and now it seems fine.

As far as dry January is going. I've made it through this week. Last night was a challenge. It was my last day of being on the road for work, and I had a pretty good day of meetings on Thursday. I definitely wanted to kick back at my hotel last night. I was hoping I could catch a movie to entertain myself but the theatre did have any late enough showings.

The caffeine withdrawals are real, bruh. I've cut out my frequent trips to Scooters down the street, but I'm still rocking the zero sugar sodas. Haven't missed the alcohol at all; waking up without a headache on Saturday and Sunday morning is quite nice. I can't hang anymore anyways.

For me, quitting soda would be harder than quitting beer.

I had to cut out caffeine, mainly coffee, for about a week after Christmas when I had developed a sore in my mouth. All of the food and drink over the holidays irritated something and I want to cut out as much salty and acidic things as I could to let it heal. Holy hell, the caffeine withdrawal headaches were a total nightmare. I did have a drink from Hyper in there to blunt it one day and then Celsius on another. After things healed up, I'm trying to limit it to a couple of cups of coffee or no more than one caffeine drink a day. If i can keep it in that 200-300 mg range and keep it to earlier in the day, I'm generally ok.

I've been slowly reducing the caffeine intake over the last couple months. I went from three Celsius (600 mg), down to two (400 mg) and then down to one of the big cans (270 mg). It has been much easier falling asleep the last couple nights and to be honest, I haven't seen a ton of difference throughout the day other than the headaches which I'm hoping will go away soon.

Dang!! I went from one Celsius (200 mg) to an Aspire (80 mg). I cut out Mountain Dew a few years (3 day) to nothing. Caffeine headaches lasted about 4-5 days.

Yeah, that's quite a bit. Rarely did I ever drink more than 2 smaller cans in one day and I always try to not have any after 2 pm. Although, all it takes is one late night and then over caffeinating the next day and the bad cycle begins.

I have three kids, two of which still get up at random hours in the night. Sometimes for an hour or two at a time. Sometimes for an hour or two at a time but in separate intervals on the same night. It has gotten better but I was living off that crap.

Unless you're in a severe stage of alcoholism, cutting out caffeine is a lot more difficult IMO. For one, it's a more physically addictive drug so you don't have to be as deep to get withdrawals. Secondly, I think most people who use caffeine use it every single day. Most people who use alcohol don't use it daily. Caffeine is much more ingrained in daily routine for most folks.

It is kinda funny how it’s by definition a drug, but we talk about it completely differently. It’s not completely harmless but it’s not going to ruin your life like other drugs. Even with coffee we’re learning more about health benefits vs health issues.
