Does Boise State Deserve Title Shot?

If ISU goes undefeated and beats 4 teams with 9 wins this year they better be in the championship. Also 38-24 is not getting dominated.

They weren't undefeated, Ohio St. lost to Illinois that season and they made it in because every other team choked at the end of the season. LSU made it to the title game with two losses that year. And OSU's schedule that year was still much, much tougher than any schedule Boise has played.

If ISU goes 12-1 and beats 4 teams with 9 wins and Boise goes undefeated I would put them in over us.

Yes if it keeps someone like oh I don't know - Iowa - out of a BCS game.

No if it keeps us out of a BCS game.

Otherwise I just don't care.

Just my opinion...:notworthy:

That's the exact problem. They probably won't be ranked 1 or 2 even if they go undefeated with their crap schedule.

They could this year just because of the pre-season ranking. All the other years, when they finished undefeated, they had a pre-season ranking of around 10 and that is what hurt them. Now presently, they are 3rd in the rankings and already have 1 vote for #1. So, as long as 1 of the 2 teams ahead of them lose and Boise goes undefeated, then they will be in the NC game. Also, too many people want them in presently b/c of what they have done in the past. I think they want to see if they could pull it off and win and in turn, completely bust the BCS.

I would disagree with you there. A 1 loss team coming from the SEC or Big XII should make it to the title game over an undefeated team from the WAC or Mountain West.

SOS should account for a big part in the BCS formula. It makes a BIG difference on WHO you play. In 2000, we didn't play either Texas or the Sooners and finished 9-3 that year. An easy schedule makes it easier to win. A tough schedule leaves you with NO margin for error over the entire season.

If they are one of two undefeated teams, or the only undefeated team, then yes, they should be in the title game. The players on the team can only play the games, they don't make the schedule. Also if some BCS coach has a problem with that, then have the balls to schedule Boise. I give Va Tech a ton of credit for stepping up and playing them.

Per the current set of bcs rules they deserve a shot.

They stay undefeated it would wreak of a conspiracy if their poll numbers dropped enough to take them out.

This. If, by the current set of BCS rules and criteria they are eligible to play in the BCS Championship Game at the end of the season, then they should damn well play in the BCS Championship Game.

One of the things I don't like about the Boise State naysayers is that IMO there seems to be a "moving bar" of what they need to do to get national respect that changes every season. Beat a BCS conference champion in Oregon last season? Meh, not good enough, they say. Win what is essentially a road game against a Top 10 team a few days ago? Well, the WAC is just a horrible conference still, so that doesn't matter. I get the impression that the Boise State haters wouldn't be satisfied until they play and beat the New Orleans Saints. You can't have it both ways; you can't set up the BCS system with all of it rules and criteria and then when a non-BCS program meets and exceeds all of that criteria then argue that they are not good enough because they are not in the "Old Boys Club".

I'd say being a BCS school and playing in a BCS conference is a requirement they don't meet.

Amazing Boise State stat that I would not have guessed. (note our eastern feathered friends are not on the list)

Most appearances in BCS standings (1998-2009):

1. Texas 85

2. Florida 83

3. (tie) Oklahoma and Ohio State 68

5 (tie) Virginia Tech and Southern California 65

7. Michigan 62

8. (tie) Miami (Fla.) and LSU 57

10. Florida State 56

11. Georgia 54

12. Oregon 53

13. Tennessee 52

14. Wisconsin 48

15. Nebraska 46

16. Penn State 43

17. Boise State 42

Well TV would love Boise State in the national title game....

ESPN’s Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 6) prime-time telecast of Boise State defeating Virginia Tech 33-30 averaged 7,252,000 households, making it the network’s most-viewed college football game – covering regular-season and bowl games – in households. With 9,888,000 viewers (people 2+), the telecast ranks as the second most-viewed college football game among total viewers (trailing only ESPN’s coverage of USC at Ohio State in 2009 which averaged 10,586,000 viewers). The Labor Day matchup averaged a 7.3 rating (equaling the average for USC at Ohio State) and stands as the highest rating for a college football game in 16 years (Florida State at Miami averaged a 7.7 on October 8, 1994).

Since its Iowa week I thought I would add that The Orange Bowl (Iowa vs. Georgia Tech) got only a 6.8 rating.

I wish VT would have just beat them, so we wouldn't even be having this convo throughout the year.

I feel exactly the opposite. It should be a conversation, and maybe when they play in the NC instead of some SEC or Big Ten school (or Texas), people will sure as hell cry foul, and they'll start having real conversations regarding a playoff of some type.

So then those BCS bowls they played in recently are illegal then?

Seriously, if that is your rationale for keeping them out then they, along with Utah, TCU, and Hawaii in recent years never should been invited to those games.

I am going to say this so perhaps it won't hurt as much as it would coming from an Iowa fan, but Iowa State isn't on the list, either.

I get your point, however. I would have never guessed Boise State would be up there.

Never expected ISU to be on that list....looking back at the next decade of CPR results maybe/hopefully. I think it would be a rather rude awakening though for the folks east of here to realize Boise State has appeared in the BCS rankings more than Iowa.

Just a thought--if our Cyclones were to go 12-1 with their current schedule and win the Big XII, and Boise State went undefeated with their schedule--who would be more deserving of the Title Game berth? ISU or BSU?

I assume you are being sarcastic. ISU of course.

I am fine with Non-BCS teams gaining at-large bids to BCS games. That's the point of an at-large bid.

But when you have a Non-BCS team in the BCS National Championship game...

That doesn't even make sense. It's like an oxymoron.

I'm all for them getting their shot if they are either the last or one of two undefeated teams left standing. If there's three, then it depends on which conference the 3rd came from. If it were Cincy out of the Big East, I'd say let Boise go. If it were Texas, then the Broncos would have to stay on the outside again.

If Boise goes 12-0, they'll have done just about everything they can to prove they deserve a shot.

This year just seems to have the taste of: "Well, they've got 20 starters back. They'll lose quite of those guys after this season. Hey Boise! You gotta go 12-0, and win another BCS game before you can get the opportunity to play for it all!" With people knowing full well that next year they aren't as likely to run the table.

For the fellow oldsters out there: Did you know Boise State was still a Junior College in 1965?

Really, it all comes down to where you start in the season rankings ( and taking care of B, of course). For the first time, BSU STARTED a season in the top five, which is a huge difference from the past.

Look at Iowa"s magical national title run last year. It was week 3 or 4 before they were even in the top 25.

If Boise runs the table and there isn't multiple undefeated squads in all the power conferences, there's a 99.9 chance they'll play for the trophy.
