Does Boise State Deserve Title Shot?

I'm not buying that they should get a chance because they have beat BCS teams over several years. Each year is a different team with different athletes, starters, etc. Boise's performance against Oklahoma four or five years ago has nothing to do with their team this year. We can only judge their merit on their body of work this year, and their schedule this year is not strong enough to support them getting a chance to play in the title game.
I think the point on historical success is valid in this case - not because it's implied that they're the same team as 4 years ago but because they've demonstrated over and over again that a team from the WAC who goes undefeated can get up and play with the BCS conference teams.

YES, enough said! I don't buy into the whole strength of schedule idea and how Boise State couldn't make it in the SEC, Big-12, etc... The answer is that they beat Oklahoma, TCU, Virginia Tech, Oregon, etc... and haven't lost since the 2008-2009 season. That is better than any other program out there right now.

So, lets face it, with 20 returning starters from a undefeated team last year, they could easily go undefeated again and if they don't play for the NC with another undefeated season, I'll be upset b/c I think they deserve to play and see what happens.

Well, those two things arent mutually exclusive. Boise St very well may be able to compete in any conf on Earth, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt buy into the "strength of schedule idea". Strength of schedule is very important. What if Nebraska or Iowa had to play our schedule this year?!
What if Boise St did? Boise St may be a world-beater but are they going to knock Texas and Okie off in consecutive weekends while also not stumbling AT Iowa and against Utah? Probably not. Strength of schedule should matter even more in the BCS rankings if you ask me.

If Boise State runs the table and then wins a BCS bowl against a Alabama, Texas or Iowa State (had to put that in there because ISU can run the table:jiggy:) I would give them the national championship...

Yes what an atrocity that would be if a team that played in such a weak conference that it never even faced a 10 win team all season EVER got into the NC. GOD FORBID!!!!

2007 Ohio State Buckeye's Schedule

Youngstown St. (FCS) - 7-4
Akron - 4-8
Washington - 4-9
Northwestern - 6-6
Minnesota - 1-11
Purdue - 7-5 (8-5 after Bowl win)
Kent State - 3-9
Michigan State - 7-5 (7-6 after bowl loss)
Pent State - 8-4 (9-4 after bowl win)
Wisconsin - 9-3 (9-4 after bowl loss)
Illinois - 9-3 (9-4 after bowl loss)
Michigan - 8-4 (9-4 after bowl win)

No wonder they got pimp-smacked by LSU 38-24 in the NC game

Ohio State makes me laugh when they think their hot stuff but their non conference schedule is weaker than the the WAC conference schedule, cant wait to see the hurricanes beat them saturday.

Yes, the bcs is ********, according to a mathematician (listened to a podcast, didn't remember the name, but it was the "stuff you should know" podcast from How Stuff Works) that only 17% of teams can play for the NC.

48% aren't in a BCS conference, and the remaining teams would have to be ranked pre-season 20 or higher to even be in that 17% shot.

The BCS breeds that only teams with heritage of success should be "allowed" to win the NC.

Boise is one of those teams that is bucking that ****** system. The haves get more money and more recruits, while the unknown schools get **** on. *look at ISU we are in a conference without revenue sharing and are expected to compete with Texas and OU.

Imagine....

This summers drama of the conference meltdown went in a direction we all feared. ISU was left out of the 16 team bcs conferences that emerged and found itself choosing between the remnants of the Big East and the Mountain West. Neither conference provided an automatic BCS birth, but ISU was out of options and chose their new conference.

Against the odds, Paul Rhoads continued to prove the skeptics wrong and after a string of five straight bowl games led ISU to an undefeated season in both their nonconference schedule where they defeated Iowa at home and and traveled to Minnesota for a second BCS conference victory. ISU was left out of the title game, but came beat once beaten Cincinnati in the Fiesta Bowl for ISU's first BCS bowl win.

ISU entered this season with their highest ever ranking with preseason polls ranking ISU at #4. ISU has a tough preseason schedule with a road game at #10 Iowa and a home game against #25 Utah. They Cyclones continued their winning ways defeating both Iowa & Utah and dominated their conference opponents. ISU has now won 25 straight games including four against BCS conference opponents.

Unfortunately for ISU, Ohio State emerged from the Big Ten (16) unscathed and ranked number one. Now the debate rages should one loss Texas who defeated USC in the Pac 10 (16) title game play Ohio State for the National Title or should Iowa State who plays in a non BCS conference get a shot?

Are you ok with ISU getting passed over by Texas?

No I'm not. And that is why I like to see the denizens of the smurf turf get passed over. The more controversy there is about the current system, the closer we get to a legitimate system for deciding a national champ.

I'm new to the site so if this has been covered forgive me. Tuesday Matt & Miller were arguing over whether Boise State deserves a shot at the title game. Matt P's argument was that they should get a shot if they are undefeated since they beat Virginia Tech. Miller's argument was that they have too soft of a schedule to earn a shot at the title.

Boise knew coming into the year that they had to beat Virigina Tech to have any shot. They had all year to prepare for them knowing the rest of their games aren't nearly as difficult. If a I-AA team like UNI beats a BCS team and runs the table with their remaining games, no one would ever think of giving them a shot at the national title. Why would it be any different for Boise State? Strength of schedule is part of the BCS calculation for a reason. Boise is an excellent program and could play with any team in the country, but until you actually play a schedule like Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Iowa, Texas, etc. you won't have my vote (not that I have any say.

What are your thoughts?

i think they have proven time and time again that they can at worst, hang with the big boys. why not give them a shot? what has happened in nearly every big game they have played in? they have won. as far as their strength of schedule goes, it seems they have done everything in their power to play any and all bcs challengers and won. yeah they play a lot of cupcakes, but its not like they are squeeking by, they dominate. i'm all for it. let 'em shake up the world of college football, give the talking heads something to shut up about for once.

Ok, so followup question for everyone? How many teams right now would beat Boise on a neutral field?

That doesn't really matter. Boise is good enough to beat anyone, as is much of the top 25. VaTech can beat Boise (didn't happen, but that game was a tossup to me). Neutral sites are only good for bowl games and Farmagedon.
The question is really how many teams could Boise beat if Boise had 4 "cupcake" non-con games and 8 big time games to finish the year. Playing on the road isn't a walk in the park in some of the bigger stadiums around the country. I would think there would be a lot of teams that could beat Boise if Boise didn't have them circled on the calendar 8 months in advance.

The rest of college football doesn't get the benefit of having 2 games to prep for. It doesn't have your tough games come at neutral sites (bowl games for the most part for Boise, Oregon was at home last year). Seriously people, when was the last time Boise had to play 5 TOUGH road games in a season???? We have Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma this year all on the road. Boise can kiss my *** as far as National Title goes.
Get some bruises week after week and then I will consider them legit NC contenders, until then they are a very good team that rises to the occasion twice a year.

After week one you cannot speak to this. This is ridiculous statement, they still have a game against a very good Oregon State team, granted they will probably roll through their conference schedule, but you never know what could happen, you have to let the season play out, wait at least 8 weeks to debate on this.

Yes, without a doubt. The teams in the WAC are the patsies that get paid by the BCS conference schools to come in and get smoked for tune up games. If you remove Boise from the equation, there isn't a single team in the Big 12 that wouldn't be favored over any other WAC opponent. Well, except Kansas of course.

Really? We would be a dog as would be k-state, ku, baylor, tech, and possibly mizzou if we played fresno state. The WAC isn't a joke conference like the MAC or the Sun Belt. When Boise joins the Mountain West that conference will be considerably better than the Big East. As to the original question, yes they do deserve a shot. They have beaten every foe presented to them, by choice or by the bcs bs

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with giggles.

This is exactly my point. Everyone knew in 2007 that the Big 10 weren't very good, but just because they were undefeated they got to play for the title. The results speak for themselves. Strength of schedule should play a bigger role in the BCS in my opinion.

Why do wins from four years ago matter? And Alabama beat Virginia Tech, Florida, LSU, and Texas all in one year last year. That's much more impressive and it's one season, not over five seasons.
You are correct any undefeated team with wins like that should be ahead of Boise St. I think the people saying that they want Boise in the NC game are assuming it is over a 1 or more loss team(at least that is what I'm saying). When you return 20 starters last years wins should count and I guess they do or they wouldn't have been ranked so high pre-season.

If ISU goes undefeated and beats 4 teams with 9 wins this year they better be in the championship. Also 38-24 is not getting dominated.

I was thinking what would happen if the football gods smiled down on ISU this year and the Cyclones went undefeated. Would Matt favor ISU, or Boise State, to play in the title game?

Concerning your last sentence, when you get old you can't remember ****, but didn't OSU score a couple of late TD's to make it look respectable. I could be wrong, and I am too lazy to look it up.

You are asking fellow old and lazy guy.

They weren't undefeated, Ohio St. lost to Illinois that season and they made it in because every other team choked at the end of the season. LSU made it to the title game with two losses that year. And OSU's schedule that year was still much, much tougher than any schedule Boise has played.

Well they continually let big ten teams into the national title and they get embarrassed why not let Boise State in? I mean if they run the table this year and they are ranked #1 or #2 they deserve it but if they go and get destroyed then i think they shouldnt be allowed back until they play a tougher schedule. It will solve all questions on whether or not a non BCS team deserves to be in the National Title and that way people will stop ********.

That's the exact problem. They probably won't be ranked 1 or 2 even if they go undefeated with their crap schedule.
