David Sims charged

Only kind of accurate Jon.

It's true that only a minority are REALLY vocal about any transgression by Hawks. However, arguably a majority of Cyclone fans won't hesitate to "turn the knife" and encourage the stereotype that Ferentz is lax on discipline and that the Iowa program is full of "criminals." And, for the record, neither of those are accurate/correct.

Similarly, Rhoads doesn't operate a rogue program either ... even though there hasn't been a shortage of bad behavior at ISU.

I really like this board ... however my primary pet peeve has been this very issue. The propagation of the aforementioned stereotypes is rather astounding. It troubles me when folks can so easily replace fact with fiction.

You may want to avoid a discussion of ISU football attendance w/Iowa fans then.

You can't shake their belief that ISU averages somewhere around 25-30K/game.

AP article: Galesburg Radio 14...WGIL

This wasn't some hiccup, lapse in judgment...he went to several stores and bought items with a stolen card. Some resting easy b/c it's "only a misdemeanor" should consider it is just dollar amounts that separate this from being a felony.
I have a huge problem with this line of logic. Society and the legislature have deemed that these are the guidelines.

he didn't "almost" commit a felony, it's an either or situation.

And since society says his crime is minor, I'm fine with ISU paying heed to that guideline.

He stole a credit card and used it people. Imagine if that was yours..... I want sims to play next season because he is our best player, but if Rhoads boots him i would be 100% satisfied with his decision. These athletes get everything handed to them, no need for this.

A huge problem? So he didn't spend enough to appease what is law. Kudos to him for this decision.

Crazy! You know the majority of Cyclone fans?!! You are one happening dude!

If he hadn't been in trouble before and made restitution, I wouldn't have a problem with charges being dropped.

I have far less compassion for the embezzlers in business and in public offices who steal and seem to get nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

He's never done anything wrong, 5th degree misdemeanor and you want him gone? This is the Big 12, this ain't intramurals brother! Way to do the right thing and give David a 2nd chance Coach Rhoads!

FWIW- Iowa has been one of the leaders in the Fulmer Cup rankings for a few years now. The Fulmer Cup tracks arrests by football players and scores them based on their seriousness. To say Iowa hasn't been worse than most programs is ignoring the facts.

With that said, the public intox arrests don't bother me on bit. It is college kids and it is Iowa City. Clayborn's incident bothered me because it was the assault of a human being that could have been avoided. The case was delayed. And then no punishment handed down. Similar to Aaron Moore for ISU on the assault charge except Moore has been suspended. We don't know the full story in Sim's case. Did he personally use the card? Did his girlfriend use the card and he didn't know? Did the girlfriend use the card and he knew? Is he paying back the $$$?
A lot of that is already known by CPR and we will find out when it is all said and done. I guess, I trust CPR on this one as he has much more informationthan we do.

When it comes down to it, each case is separate from the other case and should be treated individually as they all have different circumstances.

Oh, and don't forget how UI fans insist that ISU practices for UI year-round. (even though an Iowa player is on record saying they took time in the spring to focus on ISU).

I hate the majority of ISU fans.

I'm Brick Tamland. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally ********.

And even then, it might not have been his "decision". The card might have been cancelled before he had the chance to spend past the felony $$$ limit.

According to the report I saw, He's charged with a 3rd degree misdemeanor. The ability to plead things down to a lesser crime in our twisted justice system doesn't change the severity of the actual crime committed.

Did he or are you just making that up? We are certain he stole something. He stole credit basically. There hasn't been anything that has said he stole the card itself in some grand plan to get all the things he wants. It really doesn't matter in the grand scope I suppose but I don't really like when people make a definite statement that we are not certain is true.

I am imagining if it was mine. Sure, it would be a small pain but it wouldn't cost me anything. Hell, maybe he got some sweet deals and I could just take the stuff off his hands because I had been looking for some good deals.

Your last statement really tells me you have a prejudice against athletes anyway. My guess is most of these guys worked pretty damn hard throughout high school to get where they are. I would guess it was much harder than you average teen worked in high school.

I see your point, but the only thing that matters (the law) says the crime is less severe. ISU can play this one by the book. Iowa fans and some of the local media may get their panties in a bunch for a couple weeks if the punishment isn't harsh enough in their eyes, but I couldn't care less. Suspend him for a game and let's move on. Like someone mentioned earlier, this ain't inramurals brotha'. This is Big XII football.

I'm an Iowa fan, and I'd be more than satisfied if it was 1 or 2 games (though I believe your 2nd game is the Iowa game, and I don't want Sims to miss that one), a fairly hefty fine (at least equal to the amount that he allegedly stole), and a ton of community service. That's what Iowa guys get for a DUI (which I can't stand. They should get worse than a slap on the wrist for that), so I can't sit here and say that Sims' punishment should be harsher than that.

Well if he pleds guilty he earns a bit more respect in my book. Hopefully this will be taken care of before the season opener.

I agree with this. And I think his punishment should involve doing chores for the lady whose card he used (bad english there). Kind of like Gran Torino.

Why are people speculating as to what the punishment will be. rhoads has already stated that he was stripped of his co-captain tag and punishment will be handled internally. I have never seen game suspensions when a coach states "punishment will be handled internally.

IMO-Sims will play every game this year unless he gets hurt or something else happens. CPR knows more about what is going on than anyone on this board.

Here is Rhoads quotes:
You vote: What would you do with David Sims?
The charge, an aggravated misdemeanor, may be punishable by up to two years in jail and may include a fine between $625 and $6,250 under Iowa law.

“I have met with David about this incident and related my deep disappointment in his actions, which are not representative of a member of our football program,” coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement.

“I have informed him he will face disciplinary action, which will be handled internally in the athletics department and within our football program.

“In addition, he has been relieved of his position as a co-captain on our football team.”
Sims is suspended indefinitely, according to the school’s discipline policy for athletes. The code for first-infraction situations like Sims’ states that:
The student-athlete shall be indefinitely suspended from competition and may be suspended from practice.”

Yea he found the credit card and used it... Thats called stealing in my book? He found it, he should have turned it back in. He stole it, he took it and used it, thats STEALINGG.. I bet if it was your credit card it would be more than just a "little" pain with all the money that was spent. No im not prejudice against athletes, i know many of them here and i am around them a lot, they get a ton of benefits for being on scholly here. All the food they can eat, housing, gear, etc etc.... O YEA free school as well. There is no need for them to be doing this. Its a crime.

So are you telling me "Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers!" no longer applies? I've been going by that since Kindergarten. :arghh:
