I get why some are worried about this move, especially due to the timing. It does seem odd and probably more of a “forced” move than anything else. Lets face it if we had Ndomakong Suh (sp) inside I doubt Irving would be making this move but the coaches are playing the hand they were dealt.
The coaches seem to be very happy with the guys that they have at end and maybe Irving wasn’t slated to start or even really play all that much at this stage in the game. However if you look inside with the loss of Bevins and with what the staff said are three of the other DT’s “dinged” up then they are looking to find bodies that can contribute.
I don’t really see how this is different than what they are doing on the offensive line. There are a few positions open and depending on who emerges as the starters a player or two could shuffle around. The result is that they want the best 5 guys on the OL to play. Period. If that means that one guy is out of position but is still better than the other options then so be it.
I just see this as the same as what’s happening on the other side of the ball. ISU is thin and inexperienced to begin with on the DL especially at DT. Now add in the fact that there are 3 guys “dinged” up and the coaches made a move of necessity.
Lets all hope that for David’s sake and the sake of this football team that it was a good decision and that it will end up helping the team.
