I agree with the sentiment that there's plenty of fault to go around here. The one item that made me snicker was the taunting comment. Seriously? Taunting players occurs all game long. Proximity makes a difference?

It’s my opinion that once a fan enters the playing surface, they are trespassing. And the players should be allowed to do whatever they want to those fans. Claim self defense in the courts if you have to.

If we had security treat them like they do streakers, then I think this problem goes away pretty quickly.

I don't know how you can call that an attempt to trip the Wake student. Flip was walking towards his bench. The court stormers was trying to taunt as he ran by and their knees collided.

It’s difficult to blame Duke players or coaches in this case when there were students on the floor with time remaining.

I hate court storms because every time one happens people talk about it for days. Other than that, I couldn't possibly care less. I'll never be involved in one as a player or a fan.

I went out on the field after defeating #2 Okie State in football, it was great fun. Maybe after defeating top ten West Virginia too, I don't recall. Unlike then, both ISU basketball and football have had enough success that storming shouldn't really be a thing. The only thing I see wrong here is the court storm was ridiculously fast. The students were on the court faster than the Stanford band. Nothing serious really happened though. You do have the potential for an idiot player in the emotion of losing punching a fan or feigning a grievous injury after pretty much purposely colliding with a 140lb nerd running with their phone.

But that’s the thing. With these incidents recently and the stuff that’s said to these players, should they be concerned for their safety? And if they’re concerned for their safety, shouldn’t they be allowed to shove people out of the way to get to their locker room? Or, if Duke were to hire extra security for their team, what should they be allowed to do to protect the players?

If this were a serious knee injury, how much does this cost Duke and the player? I know there’s a lot of people on this board downplaying this because they’ve enjoyed it themselves, but there’s a lot of potential for this to become a serious event. And when that happens, who’s at fault?

IDK, walk back cautiously without purposely running into people. No, they should not shove people out of the way. Even in situations like this, most people are decent. No one is trying to hurt anyone. You act like students are attacking players. That's not happening at all. If the player just walked off the court through the crowd, this would not happen. Normally that would happen, but the player let his anger at losing effect his actions for a moment. Cell phones are also an issue, but that is generational. Both the CC thing and this the student was a more concerned about recording on their phone than watching where there going. Until you have some sort of medical report with images there have been no injuries. Just sour grapes claiming injury.

I hate Duke as the next guy, but that’s not the point. Let’s say this is a team that you don’t hate. Can you objectively blame the opposing team for the incident when fans were already on the court before the final whistle?

How do players know this? If I had a large group of people running at me full speed, I’d be afraid for my safety. I don’t know who’s in that group. What if there’s a Monica Seles type situation? I’m for sure going to do what’s needed to get out of that situation. If that means putting hands on someone to get them out of my way, I’m doing that.

I completely agree. Let's imagine that this exact same situation happens in Manhattan at the end of the season, with KSU in Wake Forest's position and Iowa State in Duke's. We would all be livid at KSU and their fans if any of Iowa State's players ended up in the middle of a court storm in the same position as Filipowski.

I don't know if I'd go that far. Being able "to do whatever they want" doesn't seem like a proportional response.

I think having security herd students away from the players is the way to go.

If video shows a court rusher intentionally hurting a player, then that individual should be subject to criminal charges.

His foot was in the air & he hooked the student running by him & then attempted a two-handed shove. Clearly a blocking foul. Filipkowski needs to get his entire body in front of that on-rushing student & get both feet planted or at least get his full body in front of him to get that charge call. He plays at freaking Duke so he should know better.

We would all be livid at KSU and their fans if any of Iowa State's players ended up in the middle of a court storm in the same position as Filipowski.

I don't expect ISU players to try tripping, kicking, and shoving KSU fans because they are frustrated that they lost a basketball game.

I'm not sure what you are watching. The player was walking to the bench. He took three normal steps before contact. The student is running onto the court and trying to yell something to the player as he runs by and gets too close. The player sees someone running at him and braces for the hit with his arms. It's a "get off me" shove, if I've ever seen one.

I don't see any intent from either person to initiate contact or cause injury. I see a player trying to exit the floor against the flow of people, and an excited student running and not under control, leading to an unnecessary collision.

If Rob Jones or Hason Ward did the same thing in that hypothetical, I'm confident a ton of people here would be supporting it. Maybe not you, I don't know.

I'd also note that walking, which is what Filipowski was doing, requires putting one foot in front of the other, so if someone runs into his path as the Wake Forest fan did, I don't think you can clearly say there was an intentional trip or a kick. I'll maybe acknowledge a push, but things also look weird when you slow them way down and watch a clip over and over again.

To me it's like if you start into an intersection after your light turns green and hit someone running the red light. Yes, you should have looked and probably been able to avoid it if you had been better aware of your surroundings, but that doesn't make it your fault because you were just doing what you were supposed to be doing. The fans on the court with time on the clock should not be there, the player should have recognized that he needed to get to his bench faster, but IMO that doesn't make it his fault because he's still the only one of them that has the right to be there.

Our players don’t need extra protection, Conrad Hawley has their backs. One look from Hawley is like a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the face and things aren’t getting any prettier.
