Court Storming

Agreed, but of those three groups, only the player is doing what he's supposed to be doing. He deserves some blame for not being aware and getting off the court more quickly, but less blame than the students that are on the court before the game is over, or the admin/security who apparently did absolutely nothing.
absolutely! I can most definitely say though if it were ISUs security and we’re in that situation, our security isn’t stopping a bunch of students (well). A lot of them are older folks who do this as a part time gig. I can’t speak for WF’s though.

I don't see how the player is to blame. He is on the court, where he is supposed to be. The game ends and he makes his way towards his bench. He should be allowed to walk without expecting a random person to run through him.
He clearly sticks his leg out for a trip and also tries to push the fan.

That is obvious.

He's supposed to be an elite athlete.

The ACC should suspend the Wake student section for two games. Just leave it empty. Students don’t care about fines. But they will care if they lose the opportunity to go to games.

Not only do students not care about fines, but more importantly Athletic Departments don't care about fines. They are willing to eat (in the case of SEC schools) $100k because they know students love to do it and the court storming will be shown on SportCenter.

Athletic Departments could EASILY solve the problem with proper barriers and courtside security. It would be a lot cheaper to hire 10 court side security folks, than pay $100k!!

Hell, college sports is moving to make football players employees, just work into their CBA that the OL & DL have to provide security at MBB/WBB games for an extra $10k a year. ;) AND YES, THEY CAN GO FULL TERRY CREWS ON STUDENTS RUSHING THE COURT!!!

Our security can absolutely do what is necessary, and has before.

Security doesn't have to stop the rush. Just slow it and create a barrier around the opposing team.

And honestly trying to fully stop court rushes could create as many problems as it solves. More potential for injury for security staff trying to fully stop a court rush, or if you take more measures to pen the fans in you could create risks of crowd injuries (or worse in the case of a crowd crush situation)

I agree with the sentiment that there's plenty of fault to go around here. The one item that made me snicker was the taunting comment. Seriously? Taunting players occurs all game long. Proximity makes a difference?

The WF arena has the students basically on the backs of the photographers sitting on the baseline, whereas Hilton there's a cushion of empty space. I think Hilton is set up to better handle this kind of situation for sure.

Another compounding factor in this situation: the visitors bench at Wake is at the same end of the court as the student section. That means that in a court storm situation, visiting players on the court are forced to go against the flow of fans coming onto the court. That just increases the chances of incidents like this.

Remove all crowds and fans. Don't let anyone attend games.

More players are injured playing than in court storming, so we should probably have the players in bunkers controlling Android facsimiles of themselves with video game controllers.
Ricie, do you really need help to understand sarcasm and hyperbole? Come on dude.

And they’ve added the railing in front of the student section. There are engineered controls in place no doubt that make it better. The security we sit by though most definitely is not stopping students if they were to storm the court.

This is slow motion bias, if you watch the whole thing you can see him take three steps and they're all generally the same, not two normal steps and then a longer step to try to trip someone.

They also don't mind it because some donor who is a little looser with their money after a big win will often step up and front the cost of the fine.

Wasn't the student section @ Hilton pushed back a while ago for just such a situation? Planning ahead works.

I don't remember but it makes sense, at the WF arena there wouldn't be any space where any security people could be in front of the students before the game was over without being on the court themselves.

OK, I think I have a solution for all of this.

1) Allow fans to mosey the court, forming 6 foot encirclements of all players home and away with well defined paths leading to the respective locker rooms.

2) As long as the fans respect these rules, they can taunt / celebrate the athletes in any way they care to (no discriminatory stuff or anything).

3) The athletes simply need to leave the floor and take any abuse they get.

4) If the fans can't follow these rules
a) the game is forfeited
b) all violators are banned from all the universities' athletics events for life.

After all, it is a fair exchange, you take our verbal abuse and don't react, we don't hurt you.

Sound fair?
