Column: Don't sleep on Sam

I felt the same way as well. He became more conservative once he got injured and would tuck the ball and run rather than take chances. I would think a lot of it was due to his injuries and just his confidence being down as a result of the ****** play calling. It's not a fair comparison between a healthy Rohach and an injured Sam. Sam is more dynamic with his ability to run, but I definitely want him to be more aggressive with his arm this season. If there was a season for it, this will be it with all the WRs we have.

I was under the impression that his injuries made him unable to properly set his feet and fully use his legs for his throws. In that case, I would hope he would be more conservative rather than throwing a weak ball into a tight window.

The bad news:
when you have 2 QBs, then you actually have no QBs. I think both are OK, but neither is great. I find it hard to believe we suddenly have 2 Sage/Seneca level QBs on the team.

The good news:
with better management (simpler offense, more rush game, better OL play) we could have better QB play than last year and a more successful offense, even if neither QB is a world-beater.

I'm sure Mangino will pick whichever one's strengths fits better into the offense he wants to run.

Agreed, you don't have to have an NFL caliber QB on a college team for the QB to be able to contribute to a successful team. Mark is just the man to make an adequate QB successful.

That was the rotation that they were on with the QB's. Rhoads stated that and said not to read too much into it......which you did.

IMO, it is coming down to either Grant or Sam. I consider them to be viable QB's that we can win with. Contrast that with 2003 season. We were awful.

How would you like to choose from these QB's.

Extra bummer: Waye Terry is a cool QB name.

Just one time, it would be nice for one of our quarterbacks to grab the job by its haunches and hump it into submission. I'm tired of this "neither one stands out" *********. They should try to be a little more like White Goodman and take the bull by the horns.

Coaches lie, I have a feeling there is a clear #1, we just don't know it yet. I don't really need to know it for another 16 days as long as the team and coaches know who the man is.

I feel the same way. Believe it or not, I have trouble believing CPR tells us everything that happens within the program. I also have never believe Rohach, Richardson, or Lanning were all playing at an equivalent level despite the word "or" on the depth chart.

Not according to his family that I sat next to during the Iowa game. In fact, they told me Grant was a bit frustrated at not being given the nod to play that day given how injured Sam was....

Heard a little different story from his Mom before the UNI game. She said Grant did hurt his hand in camp and didn't know how long into the season it would be before he could throw with no issues.

I do not doubt what you heard to be true. But, clearly, with as injured as Sam was during the Iowa game, it seemed Grant gave the impression to his family that felt he was in much better shape to play than Sam, but still was not given the opportunity.

If I remember correctly Sam played pretty well during the UNI game but hurt his ankle right at the end. He was never healthy the rest of the season.....even though he played on it quite a bit. I would like to see what he looks like healthy again.

Looking forward to having another season long QB divided fan base

Hope this is not true as well. The coaches see the practices, we do not. Have faith in the coaches. Nothing wrong with having a personal opinion, but the people that think they are right (with picking a quarterback )based off of last year, have not witnessed workouts to see improvements, plus a handle of what MM is expecting out of the quarterbacks or any other offensive position. Don't yell for the backup after the first 3 and out.........please.

Earth to Klamath, they both seem to bring about the same number of points to the table. That may or may not be good.

By 16 Aug, a qb will be chosen? We will see.

Here's another question i'm relatively curious on, Is it truly Mangino's offense? I really hope that CPR has kept his nose out of the offensive meetings, and let Mangino be the coach he is. Not like Rhoads was with Mess last year. CRP had Mess rapped around his finger.

I really think it is Mangino's offense. That was part of the deal. CPR is not an offensve guy and you don't get Mangino unless you give him complete control over the offense.

So if Grant or Sam is named the starter and totally stinks up the place and doesn't execute, we stay with him no matter what?

I don't believe in pulling the QB for making a mistake, but if the guy totally sucks you can't just sit back and not give the other guy at least a shot at some time in the game.

I think that if whoever is given the nod has a bad game they shouldn't lose the spot. They shouldn't be looking over their shoulder and terrified of making mistakes. We should pick a QB and stick with him. If the guy stinks it up for multiple games then you consider making a change.

Gotta agree with you there. For our QB to play with a sense of security that he isn't going to lose his starting job over a few mistakes would be invaluable. Let him know and believe that he is the clear cut guy so that he can go out and play without the added heat of the back up breathing down his neck. Give him a chance to improve from game to game, rather than pull his *****, and then throw him back into the mix a couple weeks later with shaky confidence, after the next guy has been yanked for the same reasons. I believe that Mangino will handle things from his own level of experience and expertise and won't play this game of QB roulette.

Your earlier quote about the significance of having the confidence and respect of your teammates is spot-on. SR's got it, earned from his "guts" last season, hard work during the spring and summer and his intelligence and understanding of the game. Teammate respect combined with his wr chemistry will make this an easy call.
