Coaching Search

I'd bet my house that IF JP hires an assistant coach, it will be Otz. Can't see him bringing Otz back to give the head coach job to another assistant. That would be a slap in the face.

Excellent coach, but Pollard has to know he's going to hear "McDermott, part II" 18.5 billion times, deserved or not.

I don't get the "excellent coach" narrative with Jacobson. I realize in a mid major conference you're going to miss the NCAA tournament from time to time, just the nature of the smaller margin for error but only 3 NCAA appearences in 9 years for a program that was in pretty decent shape before his arrival. Not calling him bad by any means but I've heard quite a few people call him excellent or a great coach and I just don't see it in the results.

If you don't like the idea of TJ being hired because he's too much of a risk, then please come up with other names, besides some guy that's a had a couple good years at a mid major.

And for those that are petitioning for Brad Underwood, just remember that 4 years ago he was Frank Martin's lead assistant, and was a candidate to take over, but the AD decided to go after the experienced Weber. Well now I can gaurantee that they all would have rather hired Underwood back then. Now their just hoping he'll still be available when the fire Weber.

TJ may be our Brad Underwood. Will he have his lumps getting used to the top position? Yes, but that's part of the process. I know next season has great potential, but let's be honest, as soon as Fred decided to leave, the upcoming season immediately became less certain.

I don't want any "lumps" learning with the best team in ISU history.

This coaching search is all about personality and style. We have a top 10 ish team coming back and have to keep them together and playing the same style of basketball. Coaching isn't rocket science and there is not all that much that they can do during a game. Get someone who really knows basketball and can teach the kids how to shoot, etc. like Fred could. Half the time Fred's "great adjustments" were to let them play street ball. Well duh, I wish I could make $2 mil a year making those adjustments.

One name that I'll throw back out, not so much for the head coaching job but as a potential assistant would be Barret Perry. I know his name floated around when either Otz or umm the young guy got the job last year. He's got significant head coaching experience, although at JuCO, recruits very well, and likes the uptempo game even more than Hoiberg. Sometimes, I wondered if they even talked about defense other than that full court press all game.

You're going to have perceived "lumps" no matter who we bring in. You think a mid major coach brought in to run a top 10 team, against the likes of Bill Self and Lon Kruger, is going to be flawless?

I think you have a good point, but just imagine if he didn't get screwed on the McDermott recruitment.

My 2 cents

I'm not worried who is coach this upcoming year, the talent on this team is enough to do very well. Since most of them are upper class men, what's most important are the years after that.

That's why TJ isn't a great fit for me (among other things). He seems like the best guy to coach us this upcoming year, but probably not so much the years after that. Hire JH if you can JP.

Yes, but JP needs to make a hire that minimizes the transition. The team needs to "buy in" to the hire, if he convinces them a choice other than TJ fine, but if they are convinced TJ is their guy, then sso be it and JP has to live or die with the choice, or have a plan B to reverse course after measuring the results of next season. noone would hire a new sales manager without consulting his/her team if they were proven to be the best in the marketplace, if the hire brought down results, his a** would be on the line. JP better do right with our guys, Georges and Monte came back because they stunk up UAB, Naz is working his a** off to get back in shape and be ready to go 100%, Jamil seems to be working on his shot day in and out, Matt is working daily, these guys deserve the tools to make them successful, JP needs to deliver! Or else, yes I would say his seat ought to be hot!

Whoever the next coach is that has a little success here, I just want them to stick around for 10 years. I'm so sick of this get-a-new-coach-every-four/five year crap.

Good coaching is knowing which half of the time to do that, and which not to.

As I stated on another thread, Leath and the big donors do not want Otz as our next coach. Why do you think JP flew to Atlanta a couple of weeks ago?
