JP is going to manipulate this thing and get his way. "Steven, I tried! Oh shucks we'll just have to hire Coach Otzelberger."

So according to Katz we will be interviewing at least Prohm, Underwood, Drew, and Otz.

Anyone think Hunter is still involved? Or just a name out there.

Why is there concern about Drew not wanting to be coaching against his brother? I can't imagine that being a reason to turn down a multi-million dollar job.

Coaching against you brother would be more reason to take the job, I would think

So far I am very underwhelmed by the candidates. I am assuming Hornacek is out and Underwood, Prohm, and Drew all have significant questions - from everything I have heard so far I hope they go with TJ. I don't think Drew is a good in game coach and his offense leave a lot to be desired, Underwood has a small sample size and will leave for K-State when they fire Weber in a year and is more of a plodder offensively, and I am not sure that Prohm can sustain things at ISU. TJ has already proven he can recruit players to ISU and while there is risk with him I think he gives the best chance to sustain what is being built. The other coaches would all probably do fine next year but I don't think they will after that and I am just not impressed with them.

SHHH. Don't think rationally about it. JP is leaking the brother thing to use as an excuse to not hire him. It's all part of the conspiracy. Just open your eyes!

A couple of thoughts based on Parrish and Katz's reports:

1. I originally thought those names got leaked to Gary Parrish so when we hired TJ, Pollard could say "hey, we tried to hire those guys!". But now that Katz is reporting we will interview all 4 plus TJ, that makes me feel much, much better.

2. Thank you President Leath for stepping in and making sure we conducted an actual search. Without that, I would be my house that TJ would have been announced yet this week. TJ might be the guy, but at least making him go through the interview process with at least 4 other guys is only smart. This appears to be yet another very narrow original "search" by Pollard. Glad we are doing things differently this time.

3. Still curious who ****ed up the Hornacek thing. I hope it wasn't us but my gut says it was his agent trying to backtrack and get some of his leverage back.

If the four names mentioned in the ESPN report are true, then to me it's a two horse race. If you want an inside hire, it's TJ. If you go outside, it's Prohm.

Underwood, Drew, and Prohm could all be good long-term, but Prohm has the added benefit of the smallest change from Hoiball for '15-'16. And you can't ignore the value of that season, not only to kickstart a new coaching tenure and boost recruiting, but to legitimately have a shot at the Final Four with the most talented ISU team maybe ever.

I think you are right.

I think there is a name or two we aren't aware of yet and may never be aware of. Bigger names with a good P5/MW/AAC job now. They have to stay under radar if/until they are selected.

You don't think there are significant questions with TJ?

Orr, Floyd, Eustachy, Morgan, McDermott, and Hoiberg all brought plenty of good players to ISU. Why couldn't Drew, Underwood, or Prohm? We've landed some really good players since TJ left for Washington, and we landed plenty of good players with each coach before him. He's not the only person that can recruit at ISU. He is the only guy on that list that hasn't coach a game though, let alone won multiple conference championships.

Another post I made behind closed doors but is very applicable to the current discussion...

Regarding the search and leaks... I was just talking to some people about that. While I absolutely think it's important for Leath to push JP out of his comfort zone - because let's be honest, all of his searches have been very limited in scope/breadth - there is a line that he can't cross of being too integrated into the actual process.

I will add that while people love what JP has done, there are a lot [redacted] that feel he's great at working the donors, building excitement, etc but can't be fully trusted to make the call on coaches. He has a narrow focus on those that he feels he has considered to lead the various programs and his mind is set from there on. Donors don't like that because they are fanatics just like everybody else and want to be excited. Leath doesn't like it because he wants to constantly push the bar higher (rightfully so).

If Leath wasn't here, we would have had TJ announced by EOD tomorrow. With Leath involved, a proper search is being conducted with input from a lot of people. As much as I think the current friction is being aired too much and hurting us, it is long overdue to be quite frank - and many people share that opinion.

I will pass along something I've heard from several key members in all of this - "JP has done more for ISU Athletics than any single individual before him, but he continues to operate like Iowa State is the little school on the prairie like when he arrived."

That sentiment speaks to the level of candidates and the money that JP has been working with, right or wrong. People don't have to like his process, but people need to love where Leath wants to take our athletic programs - much higher than even JP has envisioned.
