Stopped by the Kwik Star north location in Ankeny yesterday and noticed they were advertising $19/hour starting wage for their 3rd shift, so I assume the starting wage is a few dollars less for the first two shifts.

Does Casey's start at $15/hour?

I think Kwik Trip/Star is about $16.

They must have some decent perks, flexible scheduling etc. though because most that I frequent have had the same employees for several years.

Agree with that. We drive through Dubuque to visit my inlaws in Wisconsin 10ish times a year and always stop about 8:30-9pm on a Friday night. The same woman has been working there for years and now recognizes us and knows what my boys like to get.

Any Buce's I've been to is a crowded fricking zoo complete with workers directing traffic. Not impressed

I love Bucees but its not really direct competition with a Caseys or KwikStar-type gas station. Its more of a destination stop, honestly.

No kidding. I remember going to Pizza Ranch in my youth because it was decent and cheap. We took the kids about a year ago, and it was the first time I'd set foot in a Pizza Ranch in several years. The quality is still decent, but the price has gone way up.

I grew up in NW IA and the old pizza parlor style Pizza Ranches were legit good. Not sure when they decided to give up on good pizza and went all in on the buffet but damn I miss their old Pizza.

I've been to several Buc'ees in TX - very impressive. They appear to depend on high volume traffic flow. I don't think IA has the traffic volume flow to support a Buc'ess. Kwik Star is hitting it - large early morning traffic for bakery, breakfast sandwiches, and a lot of construction guys picking up sandwiches for lunch. Also, hitting it hard a lunch, especially the construction guys getting sandwiches. Of course, a lot getting gas at the same time. Other than pizza from Casey's (which is still pretty good in our area), they are bottom choice, well I should say a notch above Kum & Go.

IMO, one of the nicest things about KS is their dairy, eggs, breads, potatoes, onions, bananas. Stopping for a few minutes for those items, which are very reasonably priced, makes day to day grocery shopping much easier.

Best gas station chicken I have ever had, Not the most spicy, etc. but best quality, cooking and deal. Don's Motor Mart in Lake Mills Iowa.

By far the best quality I have ever had. Unless its changed in recent years, it is really good. If anyone is ever in Lake Mills, give it a shot.

edit: The chick strips are the best but bone in is really good too!
it is very good

Just got the annual report from Caseys. They are doing very well financially.

While I agree it has gone way downhill, Pizza Ranch PEAKED at mediocre. Never understood why anyone would eat there, always found it greasy and unsanitary.

Did you go to Pizza Ranch for pizza? The only reason to go to PR is the fired chicken. Pizza is terrible, bread sticks are fine, desert pizza is good. But when fresh, they have the best fried chicken.

Dont know about terrible, but its not in my top 5. The chicken and broasted potatoes are where I hang my hat for sure.

What has become of their taco pizza is a shame. Don't even cover the whole pizza with chips. I take advantage of their rewards program but other than that it's not impressive anymore.

Kwik Star rewards are better than Caseys rewards. You just have to dig through the coupons on the app and add them once in awhile.

I'm a Kwik Star guy but have never understood the love of their chicken. I tried one of their big crispy chicken sandwiches from the Marion location yesterday and it was soggy and rubbery. I ended up tossing it after one bite. We got sick off some chicken from the Ankeny Kwik Star awhile back.

That being said, I have gotten to point where I will actively avoid Caseys at home and when I'm on the road. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. There's like 2 hot food options at any given time because they're never stocked up. It's also crazy expensive for everything.

You are exactly right. I go there mainly for cheese sticks and chicken. Pizza is not good.

One went to Pizza Ranch when one had no other options. The business model was to put franchises in towns that were too small for a Pizza Hut, and it worked marvelously. They’ve transitioned to bigger cities and, via buffet, probably bigger margins (and something not offered at other places). I’m hardly an expert, but the food quality seems to have stayed consistent (mediocre).
